ATP Gstaad Best Bets Including Thiem vs Varillas

Dominic Thiem in action ahead of the ATP Madrid Open.

ATP 250 Gstaad 1/16-Finals

Thiem – Varillas: 15.07.2024 15:00 CEST
H2H: 2-1

Dominic Thiem has lost three of his last five matches. The last match Dominic played was almost a month ago against Monfils at the ATP Mallorca. Thiem lost that match in straight sets on his least favorite surface, the grass court. His last clay court match was at the French Open, where he lost against Virtanen in the second qualifying round. Dominic announced that this is his last season. The constant injuries have unfortunately ruined his career. So far this season, Thiem has a losing 4-7 record on the clay courts. Last year in Gstaad, Thiem lost in the second round against Medjedovic in three sets.

Juan Pablo Varillas has won three of his last five matches. Here in Gstaad, Juan fought through the qualifying tournament and got into the main-draw. In the first qualifying round, Varillas won against Tabur in easy straight sets. After that, Varillas struggled against Kym in the second qualifying round. However, Varillas was the better player in the deciding set, and won the match in three sets in the end. Juan spent most of his career playing at the challenger tour level. However, here in Gstaad, Varillas reached the quarterfinals in 2022, and in 2023.

Best Bet to Make

According to the bookies, Varillas is the slight favorite in this matchup. The surface in Gstaad is really fast, which should be great for his playing style. On the other hand, Thiem is in terrible form, and we believe that his struggles will continue.

That being said, Varillas winning is a value bet.

Huesler – Medjedovic: 15.07.2024 17:30 CEST
H2H: 0-1

Marc-Andrea Huesler has lost three of his last five matches. Last week, Huesler played the challenger tournament in Salzburg on clay where he lost in the second round against Medjedovic in straight sets. The Swiss was a top 50 player last season. However, his recent poor performances dropped him out of the top 200. Last year in Gstaad, Huesler lost in the first round against Rodionov in straight sets.

Hamad Medjedovic has won three of his last five matches. Last week in Salzburg, Medjedovic lost in the quarterfinals against Buse at the challenger tournament. The Serbian loves to play on the fast clay courts. Last year in Gstaad, Medjedovic entered the tournament as a qualifier. Hamad won five straight matches there and reached the semifinals, where he was defeated by Cachin in straight sets. This is an important tournament for Medjedovic, who is looking to get into the top 100.

Best Bet to Make

According to the bookies, Medjedovic is the favorite in this matchup. Both players are out of form. However, Hamad is way younger than Huesler, so we expect him to be inconsistent at this part of his career. We believe that Medjedovic is overall a way better clay court player than Huesler, and that he will win this match easily.

That being said, Medjedovic covering the games handicap is a value bet.
