Three Players Withdraw From ATP Hamburg Open

The first ATP 500 event after Wimbledon will be held on clay at the Hamburg Open. Unsurprisingly, many great players are set to feature in Germany. This includes French Open runner-up Alexander Zverev and the hugely talented Arthur Fils, who enjoyed a breakthrough season last year. However, three players have withdrawn from the Hamburg Open. This article lists those who have decided to withdraw and then names their three replacements in the draw.

Three Players Withdraw From Hamburg Open

Which Players Have Withdrawn?

Gael Monfils was the first player to withdraw from the Hamburg Open. The veteran Frenchman had a solid grass-court season. He reached the semifinal in Mallorca before progressing to the third round at Wimbledon, where he lost to Grigor Dimitrov. Monfils is on the French Olympic team at Roland-Garros, so it will be interesting to observe whether he chooses to play any other tournaments on clay before the event begins on June 27th.

Daniel Evans was the second player to withdraw from the Hamburg Open. The Briton has endured a very difficult last few months. Evans usually struggles on clay, meaning it is not surprising to see him not play on clay immediately after Wimbledon. An injury or physical issue does not appear to be the reason for his decision.

Corentin Moutet was the final player to withdraw from the Hamburg Open. Unlike Monfils and Evans, this is due to a confirmed physical problem. Moutet withdrew from Wimbledon due to a bone bruise injury. The Frenchman is being cautious to give himself the best chance of being ready for the Olympics.

Who Replaces Those Three Players in the Draw?

Zizou Bergs benefits from Monfils’ decision to withdraw from the Hamburg Open. He lost a five-set epic against Arthur Cazaux in the first-round at Wimbledon. His best Grand Slam result was at this year’s French Open, where he reached the third-round.

Soonwoo Kwon replaces Evans at the Hamburg Open. Holger Rune comfortably beat the Korean in the opening round of Wimbledon. He will hope to have better luck on the clay courts in Germany.

Finally, Thaigo Seyboth Wild takes Moutet’s place at the Hamburg Open. The Brazilian is very exciting to watch at his absolute best. Seyboth Wild also usually plays his best tennis on clay, like when he defeated Daniil Medvedev at the French Open last year.
