French Open Day 4 Women’s Predictions Including Coco Gauff vs Tamara Zidansek

Coco Gauff French Open

The second round of the women’s singles starts on Day 4 of the French Open. We will get to see 16 matches scheduled for Wednesday, and our writers here at LWOT will predict all of them for you, as always. We split the matches between four articles. Our other three articles feature Iga Swiatek vs Naomi Osaka, Danielle Collins vs Olga Danilovic, and Ons Jabeur vs Camila Osorio. Predicting these matches are Jordan Reynolds, Shane Black, and Yesh Ginsburg. Who do you think will advance?

French Open Day 4 Predictions

Marta Kostyuk vs Donna Vekic

Jordan:
Both players got to the second round in very different ways. Vekic benefited from a first retirement from Lesia Tsurenko, while Kostyuk came back from 4-0 down in the deciding set against Laura Pigossi. Despite how close the Ukrainian was to going out in the last round, I like her chances here. She is capable of using her athleticism to extend the rallies and get Vekic on the move, which is one of the keys to beating her. I also back Kostyuk’s fitness levels more if the match stretches deep into a third set.
Prediction: Kostyuk in 3

Shane:
Marta Kostyuk has had an incredible start to the season, currently holding a 20-9 record. Donna Vekic is always a candidate to cause some trouble in a Slam draw, but Kostyuk’s current form is too strong for me to see her suffering an upset.
Prediction: Kostyuk in 2

Yesh:
Marta Kostyuk has the pure potential to be a Major champion, but it never seems all quite there. She’s been great this year so far, and while Vekic is solid enough to push her, she won’t beat her in current form.
Prediction: Kostyuk in 2

Viktoriya Tomova vs Xinyu Wang

Jordan:
Tomova caused a shock in the previous round by knocking out Ekaterina Alexandrova. She is often inconsistent though and does not always build on her successes. Despite that, Wang is least comfortable playing on clay, despite her first-round win. That makes Tomova a slight favorite.
Prediction: Tomova in 3

Shane:
Expect some nerves in this match as both unseeded players are on the verge of reaching the third round of Roland Garros. Tomova has been playing better over the past few weeks, but her overall 2024 body of work does not give me the confidence she can string together another victory.
Prediction: Wang in 3

Yesh:
Tomova was really impressive in taking out Ekaterina Alexandrova in the first round. Based on that alone, she seems in great form and ready to follow it up against a weaker opponent on clay.
Prediction: Tomova in 3

Jelena Ostapenko vs Clara Tauson

Jordan:
These two had an epic battle a few months ago in Linz, which Ostapenko won in a deciding set tiebreak, before going on to win the title. Tauson is one of the most inconsistent players in the women’s game, but the Dane showed how dangerous she can be in her demolition of Tatjana Maria in the last round. Nonetheless, I still trust Ostapenko more on clay.
Prediction: Ostapenko in 2

Shane:
I believe No. 9 seed Jelena Ostapenko should be on full upset alert against Clara Tauson. The 21-year-old Dane is extremely dangerous and has the confidence to back it up. Give me Tauson in the upset.
Prediction: Tauson in 3

Yesh:
Ostapenko has been in great form recently. And while she probably isn’t consistent enough to win this whole event like she did seven years ago, but she’s locked-in and ready to take out even other really good players.
Prediction: Ostapenko in 2

Coco Gauff vs Tamara Zidansek

Jordan:
Zidansek being a former semifinalist in Paris will be enough to keep Gauff on her toes here. The world No. 3 is still a much better overall player and was very impressive in the opening round. She should come through comfortably.
Prediction: Gauff in 2

Shane:
I expect Gauff to make a strong push to the second Saturday of Roland Garros. She is focused and should roll by Zidansek.
Prediction: Gauff in 2

Yesh:
Coco Gauff is in brilliant form and looks like a real threat to reach the semifinals. I don’t expect her to be in too much trouble before then.
Prediction: Gauff in 2
