WTA San Diego Day 2 Predictions Including Leylah Fernandez vs Tatjana Maria

Leylah Fernandez in action ahead of the WTA Jiangxi Open.

The second day of the WTA San Diego Open has six great matches scheduled. Former US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez’s match is one of three predicted in this article. We at LWOT have a separate article with predictions for the other three contest in San Diego, including Caroline Wozniacki vs Anna Blinkova. Which players do you think will win?

WTA San Diego Day 2 Predictions

Katerina Siniakova vs Mai Hontama

Head-to-head: First meeting

Siniakova received much attention after beating US Open champion Coco Gauff in Qatar. She has lost both her matches since, although Danielle Collins and Emma Navarro played very well against her. It is unlikely that Siniakova will suffer a third straight loss. Hontama is ranked outside the Top 100 and has not won a WTA main-draw match in 2024. Siniakova will need to be far below her best to lose at the WTA San Diego Open. Some of her best tennis will be enough and she should be able to find it.
Prediction: Siniakova in 2

Donna Vekic vs Katherine Hui

Head-to-head: First meeting

Vekic’s narrow loss to Sorana Cirstea in the third-round will have been a tough one to take. After her amazing win against Aryna Sabalenka, it seemed like it could be her time to make a deep run at WTA 1000 level. Instead, it was Jasmine Paolini who took that chance. Nonetheless, even if Vekic is still feeling that disappointment, she should win this opening match. Hui is certainly very talented at the age of 19. However, the reality is that the American wildcard is ranked outside the Top 600. It will take a special performance to beat the Croat, but it will be a great experience for the teenager regardless. Vekic to win in two sets at the WTA San Diego Open.
Prediction: Vekic in 2

Leylah Fernandez vs Tatjana Maria

Head-to-head: Maria 1-0 Fernandez

Fernandez has been a little unlucky in her last couple of losses. She has been playing some great tennis, as she showed by getting to the quarterfinal in Doha. Her last two defeats were to Elena Rybakina and Jasmine Paolini, who both played excellent matches. Maria beat Fernandez in straight sets last year in Cleveland, and does possess a crafty game to cause the Canadian issues. But Fernandez was in a slump when they last played. That is not the case now and I expect her to claim victory at the WTA San Diego Open.
Prediction: Fernandez in 2
