Novak Djokovic is back in action on Day 5 of the United Cup. The recent ATP Finals champion started the season impressively in his singles and doubles matches against China. Team Serbia will qualify for the knockout stages with a victory in this tie. As always, we at LWOT provide predictions for all the day’s United Cup matches. But which teams and players do you think will win?
United Cup Day 5 Predictions
Novak Djokovic vs Jiri Lehecka
Head-to-head: First meeting
There does not seem to be any sign of Djokovic slowing down after his phenomenal 2023 season. Lehecka lost a very tight battle to Zhang Zhizhen in the Czech Republic’s previous tie against China. He needs a perfect display to have any chance against the 24-time Grand Slam champion. Lehecka is a clean ball-striker, and will have to hope that his illustrious opponent is having a rare bad day. His serve will also be key to get at least a few free points, as playing intense rallies point after point against Djokovic will not be a viable winning strategy.
Prediction: Djokovic in 2
Marketa Vondrousova vs Olga Danilovic
Head-to-head: First meeting
It will be interesting to observe how consistent Vondrousova can be this year, after her stunning Wimbledon success last season. Some players often have a significant dip after a shock success. The Czech played well at times against Qinqen Zheng in the opening tie, but succumbed to a three-set loss. Vondrousova is the favourite against the much lower-ranked Danilovic. However, the heavy spin Vondrousova uses from her forehand may suit the Serbian, who plays her best tennis on high bouncing clay courts. The Czech should still have the edge overall, but it could be a competitive clash.
Prediction: Vondrousova in 3
Olga Danilovic/Novak Djokovic vs Miriam Kolodziejova/Petr Nouza
Head-to-head: First meeting
Czech Republic have changed their planned doubles team for this clash. Vondrousova and Lehecka were paired against China, but won only three games in a straight sets drubbing. It is a big ask for Kolodziejova and Nouza coming into a contest against a team that includes Djokovic. Kolodziejova does have a doubles title to her name, but that experience is very unlikely to be enough. Danilovic did look understandably nervous at times in her doubles win with Djokovic against China. However, her and Djokovic should have too much for the Czechs, and if the other predictions are correct, that will seal Serbia’s place in the knockout stages.
Prediction: Danilovic/Djokovic in 2
