The United Cup continues, and world #1 Novak Djokovic is set to be in action. It will be the 24-time Grand Slam champion’s first ATP event since winning a record seventh ATP Finals title in November. Djokovic is representing Serbia, as they take on China, who will qualify for the knockout stage with a victory over the Serbians. But which team do you think will prevail?
United Cup Day 3 Predictions
Olga Danilovic vs Zheng Qinwen
Head-to-head: first meeting
Zheng Qinwen had a superb 2023, and was recognized as the WTA most improved player of the year for her efforts. She is now ranked inside the Top 20, and expectations are higher this season for the 21-year-old. Zheng starts as a strong favourite against Danilovic. The Serbian is ranked outside the Top 100, and has a preference for clay courts. The 22-year-old is a good competitor, and will fight to the end. Nevertheless, expect the firepower of Zheng to have too much. She should win in straight sets.
Prediction: Zheng in 2
Novak Djokovic vs Zhang Zhizhen
Head-to-head: first meeting
This is Djokovic’s first ATP match of the year, although he did play an exhibition match with Carlos Alcaraz a few days ago. The Spaniard won a close contest, but both men looked sharp heading into the new season. Although Djokovic is a considerable favourite against Zhang, he will still be wary. The Chinese player level often fluctuates wildly, but he is dangerous when his serve and forehand find their range.
Zhang will need to play a perfect match, and also hope his illustrious opponent is still somewhat rusty. However, even a below par Djokovic should have enough to soak up any pressure that Zhang does throw at him.
Prediction: Djokovic in 2
Novak Djokovic/Olga Danilovic vs Zhizhen Zhang/Qinwen Zheng
Head-to-head: first meeting
Team China have an experience issue in this matchup. Both Zhang and Zheng have played very few doubles matches throughout their careers. By contrast, Danilovic has won two WTA doubles titles, and although Djokovic is not a frequent doubles player, he still has considerably more experience than the Chinese players. This is before the sheer class of the 24-time Grand Slam champion is taken into account.
The United Cup doubles contests often produce surprise results, and the Chinese duo could effectively target Danilovic with good success. Overall, though, the Serbians are the favourites to prevail, and seal victory in the tie if the previous two predictions are correct.
Prediction: Djokovic/Danilovic in 2
