Clay-court tennis

The final of the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest has arrived, granting the opportunity for one of two women to grab their first-ever WTA title. After a week marred by controversy in the first round, this match will be a huge chance for either Kateryna Baindl or Maria Timofeeva to make a big step in their carers. Who will break through on Sunday?

WTA Budapest Final Prediction

Kateryna Baindl vs Maria Timofeeva

Head-to-head: First meeting

Maria Timofeeva has certainly had the dream week, and she’s even lost already at this event before it even started. In fact, Timofeeva is the first lucky loser to make a WTA tour-level final in over a year. She’s taken the lucky loser opportunity to new heights, grinding through multiple three-set matches. Her only straight-sets win was a demolition job of Diana Shnaider, an up-and-coming star fresh out of college. Winning 6-1 6-1, she certainly has the ability to blow players off the course.

Meanwhile, Baindl’s route was equally taxing. She had to play twice on Saturday, conquering a long day of matchplay after frustrating rain cancellations. Saving much-needed energy, the Ukrainian was able to win two matches in straight sets, taking out Fanny Stollar and Claire Liu. There were multiple long sets, however, featuring a couple of tiebreaks. Baindl has never won a WTA title, but did appear once in a final. She also took home a WTA 125K title, a level similar to the 250 but not formally recognized as a tour-level win.

This could be a very interesting matchup given the nerves that will likely creep into either player’s game. Timofeeva can play more freely, potentially giving her the freedom to try new things on court. Baindl will likely come in with a regimented strategy, playing to the weaker side. Yet, Timofeeva is relatively unknown on tour, so Baindl may not be able to truly grasp her opponent’s weaknesses. Going for the upset on this one, as there’s something about Timofeeva’s willingness for revenge after losing in qualifying already. The actual tennis won’t decide this match, but the more tenacious and mentally strong player will win. This is a great opportunity, and Timofeeva will be extremely motivated to not squander it.
Prediction: Timofeeva in 3
