Wimbledon Day 2 Women’s Predictions Including Karolina Muchova vs Jule Niemeier

Karolina Muchova in action at the French Open.

On Tuesday, Day 2 of the Wimbledon Championships, we will complete both the men’s and women’s first rounds. That means there are 32 women’s singles matches, and–as always–we here at LWOT will share our thoughts on every single one of them with you. We split the day’s 32 matches into eight articles. Our other seven articles feature Beatriz Haddad Maia vs Yulia Putintseva, Petra Kvitova vs Jasmine Paolini, Aryna Sabalenka vs Panna Udvardy, Elena Rybakina vs Shelby Rogers, Ons Jabeur vs Magdalena Frech, Bianca Andreescu vs Anna Bondar, and Maria Sakkari vs Marta Kostyuk. Predicting this set of matches are Jack Edward, Jakub Bobro, and Jordan Reynolds. Who do you think will advance?

Wimbledon Day 2 Women’s Predictions

Madison Brengle vs Sara Errani

Jack:
It’s difficult for Sara Errani to hide her service woes on a clay-court. On grass, the problem is exacerbated. It’s not a great match-up for Madison Brengle but she should still be considered the favorite here.
Prediction: Brengle in 3

Jakub:
Pretty much the antithesis of Muchova vs Niemeier in being an almost comically unattractive match up between two of the most underpowered players in this draw. I have no clue what a match between would even look like on grass though, so there is some intrigue here.
Prediction: Brengle in 3

Jordan:
Errani has had the least amount of success on grass in her lengthy career. Third round appearances at Wimbledon represent the best results for both players. My inkling is the slightly lower ranked Brengle will have enough firepower to defeat the Italian.
Prediction: Brengle in 3

Anhelina Kalinina vs Jessica Bouzas Maneiro

Jack:
It’s early days in the career of Jessica Bouzas Maneiro but she’s already winning plenty of matches. Anhelina Kalinina will be given a difficult time on her lesser-preferred surface but she probably still strikes a quality enough ball to dispatch the youngster.
Prediction: Kalinina in 3

Jakub:
Kalinina is one of the less threatening seeds on grass so Bouzas Maneiro has a chance here coming out of qualifying. I believe the Ukrainian will hold it down though.
Prediction: Kalinina in 3

Jordan:
Kalnina has risen up the rankings to be a seeded player largely thanks to her final appearance at the Italian Open. She has yet to have any grass court results of more. Her Spanish opponent has done very well to qualify for her first Grand Slam at Wimbledon as throughout her ITF career she has been more comfortable on clay. I think her run will stop here, though.
Prediction: Kalinina in 3

Camila Giorgi vs Varvara Gracheva

Jack:
Camila Giorgi is one of those players that’s difficult to trust. On this occasion, I’m going to side with her opponent, Varvara Gracheva. I think grass keeps the ball out of the Italian’s strike zone making it difficult for her to be consistently aggressive.
Prediction: Gracheva in 3

Jakub:
Giorgi is a very tough potential second round opponent for Aryna Sabalenka but will first have to face the newly French Gracheva. Every match is on Giorgi’s racket and I see her winning here.
Prediction: Giorgi in 2

Jordan:
The #48 takes on the #41. Giorgi reached the semifinal at Eastbourne last week, and Gracheva the quarterfinals at the Bad Homburg Open. But Giorgi is a former quarterfinalist at Wimbledon and has more Grand Slam experience overall, which may give her the edge.
Prediction: Giorgi in 3

Karolina Muchova vs Jule Niemeier

Jack:
Karolina Muchova did amazing things at the French Open yet she played that fortnight like she was on a grass court. Big serving, backhand slices, forehand approaches, sound volleys—Muchova should be a nightmare to play at Wimbledon. Last year’s quarterfinalist, Jule Niemeier will struggle to find her bearings.
Prediction: Muchova in 2

Jakub:
One of the most exciting first round matches between two brilliant grass court players. Niemeier has the sheer power while Muchova has the variety and net play. It is a shame we will lose either player this early.
Prediction: Muchova in 3

Jordan:
This is one of the more interesting Round 1 matchups. Muchová has not played any tournaments since her incredible run to the French Open final, but the two time Wimbledon quarterfinalist has the touch and variety to be similarly dangerous on grass. Niemeier has had a difficult year and currently sits outside the Top 100, but was a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon last year. She will be looking to recapture that inspiration, but I don’t think it will be enough.
Prediction: Muchova in 2
