Wimbledon Day 2 Men’s Predictions Including Daniil Medvedev vs Arthur Fery

Daniil Medvedev, top seed in Halle, in action at Wimbledon.

Day 2 at Wimbledon will see the conclusion of the first round. That means there are 32 men’s matches on offer on Tuesday, and–as always–we here at LWOT will share our thoughts on all of them with you. We split the day’s 32 matches between eight articles. The other seven articles feature Carlos Alcaraz vs Jeremy Chardy, Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Dominic Thiem, Holger Rune vs George Loffhagen, Alex de Minaur vs Kimmer Coppejans, Andy Murray vs Ryan Peniston, Cameron Norrie vs Tomas Machac, and Frances Tiafoe vs Yibing Wu. Predicting this set of matches are Shane Black, Jakub Bobro, Damian Kust. Who do you think will advance?

Wimbledon Day 2 Men’s Predictions

Matteo Berrettini vs Lorenzo Sonego

Shane:
We have a very intriguing Round 1 matchup when Italian counterparts Matteo Berrettini and Lorenzo Sonego square off. Berrettini holds the 3-1 head-to-head advantage, but Sonego’s one win came on the Stuttgart grass less than a month ago. Berrettini has been dealing with injuries this season and has just four Tour-level wins. Despite being a finalist at this event two years ago, I cannot trust his current form.
Prediction: Sonego in 4

Jakub:
Two dangerous Italian floaters here (depending on Berrettini’s fitness). Sonego should have enough to take advantage of Berrettini’s rust here.
Prediction: Sonego in 4

Damian:
Berrettini was far from ready when he played in Queen’s and got smashed off the court by… Sonego. He won’t be a factor in this event either, but maybe can win a round if he’s healthy? Let’s hope he at least gives the fans a better show, but I can’t go against Sonego.
Prediction: Sonego in 4

Christopher Eubanks vs Thiago Monteiro

Shane:
Christopher Eubanks raised his first ATP title over the weekend in Mallorca. Eubanks is 12-3 on the grass this season and is playing with great confidence. This will be Thiago Monteiro’s first grass-court match of the season. He will be unable to keep up with Eubanks’ serve and overall game.
Prediction: Eubanks in 3

Jakub:
Eubanks is coming off of a title while Monteiro lost early at a clay Challenger last week. The American has expressed he’s not fully comfortable moving on grass still but he should be taking care of business here.
Prediction: Eubanks in 3

Damian:
Eubanks won his maiden ATP Tour title in Mallorca. He’s one of the big-hitters whose serves are amazing on grass, but ground games actually like a slightly higher bounce. Nevertheless, he should be fine here against Monteiro, who’s no grass-courter and is struggling right now anyway.
Prediction: Eubanks in 3

Marcos Giron vs Hugo Dellien

Shane:
Marcos Giron has had an up-and-down 2023 season but enters this Round 1 match against Hugo Dellien as the favorite. The 30-year-old Bolivian is just 1-6 in his career on the grass. Giron should have no problem cleaning up in this one.
Prediction: Giron in 3

Jakub:
Dellien is a clay courter through and through. The Bolivian may try to grind points out but Giron should get the win here.
Prediction: Giron in 4

Damian:
Very fortunate draw for Giron and it’s not like he truly needed to be this lucky. Dellien’s form disappeared along with the health issues and his last few matches were a disaster. Turning it around on grass sounds like mission impossible.
Prediction: Giron in 3

Daniil Medvedev vs Arthur Fery

Shane:
No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev gets a tricky Round 1 matchup against 20-year-old British wildcard Artury Fery. Medvedev is just 2-2 on the grass this season but should be able to handle this encounter. Fery does not have the tools to hit through the Russian.
Prediction: Medvedev in 3

Jakub:
Medvedev gets to play himself into form against the British wild card here. Fery has had some decent grass ITF results but couldn’t really replicate them even against Challenger-level opposition.
Prediction: Medvedev in 3

Damian:
I’m really excited to see what Fery does once he’s out of college, and he’s bound to hit some ridiculous backhands like usual. Medvedev with the combination of big serve and excellent defense just sounds like too much for the young Brit right now.
Prediction: Medvedev in 3
