We get Day 1 on Sunday at the ATP 250 in Lyon, France, as players take their final opportunity to prepare for the French Open. As always, we here at LWOT share our thoughts on the matches with you. Who do you think will advance?
ATP Lyon Day 1 Predictions
Albert Ramos-Vinolas vs Juan Pablo Varillas
It’s easy to say that Ramos-Vinolas is past his prime, but that somewhat misses the trajectory of his career. Ramos-Vinolas was playing his best tennis in recent years, and only this season has really declined. Is that the beginning of the end for him, or is it just a dip in form? Either way, he’s still ranked higher than his compatriot here, and undefeated against him as well. Expect the elder Spaniard to move on.
Prediction: Ramos-Vinolas in 2
Gregoire Barrere vs Corentin Moutet
A fun battle of Frenchmen as we prepare for France’s biggest tournament of the year. Can’t ask for more than that. The two have never met at Tour level, but they did split their two meetings several years back in Futures events. Barrere has the higher upside and is probably playing slightly better right now, but there’s really not much to separate these two.
Prediction: Barrere in 3
Jack Draper vs Alexandre Muller
We don’t really yet know what the young British phenom is capable of on clay, though he has very quickly proven his talent on other surfaces. He’ll probably take a little extra time to find his good clay footing, though. Of course, while Muller is a solid player, he doesn’t quite have Draper’s talent. As long as the Brit’s serve is clicking, he’ll have enough to at least get through this match.
Prediction: Draper in 3
