WTA Miami Semifinal Prediction

Petra Kvitova vs Sorana Cirstea

Head-to-Head: Kvitova 6-4 Cirstea

Separated in age by just 30 days, Petra Kvitova and Sorana Cirstea have played each other numerous times over the last two decades. Their first professional meeting came in Budapest in 2008. Their most recent encounter was last season in Cincinnati. Kvitova holds the 6-4 edge over Cirstea, though Cirstea holds the 4-1 advantage when they have squared off on a hard court.

Kvitova comes into this match holding a 15-5 record this season. This week, she has wins over Donna Vekic and Ekaterina Alexandrova. She has played excellent tennis during the Sunshine Double and is on the brink of reaching her 13th career 1000-level title. Cirstea has yet to drop a set in five matches in Miami. She took down No. 5 seed Caroline Garcia in Round 2 and is coming off a very impressive quarterfinal win over No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka. With a win over Kvitova, she will move into her second career 1000-level final.

When everything is clicking for Cirstea, like this week, she is very tough to beat. The Romanian is a tough player to bully around the court, but that is what the hard-hitting Kvitova will try and do on Friday. I expect a high-powered baseline battle between these familiar foes. I believe this match will go the distance, but I have more trust in Kvitova to raise her level in the crucial moments.

Prediction: Kvitova in 3
