Fourth seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia beat Quentin Halys of France 6-4 6-2 in the fourth round of the Miami Open on Tuesday. The match lasted for a little more than an hour, as Halys struggled to cope with Medvedev’s powerful groundstrokes.
The 27-year-old Russian will face Christopher Eubanks of the United States in the quarterfinal on Thursday and will start as the favorite in that match. On that note, we will take a look at how the match progressed:
Halys played from the forecourt too often:
Halys, despite having a strong serve, knew that he did not have the ability to overpower Medvedev from the baseline. Hence, he ventured forward a little too often and also played drop shots to drag the Russian into the net.
However, Daniil Medvedev was often able to chase down the ball thanks to his wonderful court coverage. Halys managed to hit a few brilliant volley winners off his backhand, but that was not enough to disrupt the Russian’s rhythm.
Medvedev broke Halys in the seventh game of the first set and then went on to hold his serve to win the first set without much problem.
Daniil Medvedev turned on the heat in the second set:
Medvedev raised his level in the second set to give the Frenchman no chance. Halys kept going into the net pretty often in the second set, too, but often struggled to cope with the Russian’s passing shots.
Medvedev broke Halys in the first and fifth set of the second set to finish the match off easily. Halys could win only 27% of the points on his second serve in the match, while Medvedev managed a far better 75%. The Russian has now got a relatively easy opponent in the quarterfinal and remain strongly in contention for the title.
