The ATP Movistar Chile Open is back in Santiago for the fourth consecutive year as the once-28-man draw has dwindled to eight quarterfinalists. Only two seeded players remain in the draw, but that is not to say this quarterfinal slate is not loaded with intriguing matchups. Sebastian Baez and Laslo Djere are set to square off for the first time as they are scheduled to kick off the night session in the Chilean capital. We at LWOT have the preview and prediction for that match and all other happenings around the grounds of Santiago. But who will advance?
ATP Santiago Quarterfinal Predictions
Jaume Munar vs Thiago Monteiro
Head-to-Head: Munar 3-1 Monteiro
Clay-court specialists Jaume Munar and Thiago Monteiro will square off in the Santiago quarterfinals. Munar is coming off a very impressive 6-4 6-4 win over Lorenzo Musetti and should be one of the favorites to win this event. The Spaniard has a solid history against lefties and has won three of the four matches he has played against Monteiro. I expect the Brazilian to put on a show digging balls out of both corners, but I believe Munar will eventually wear him down.
Prediction: Munar in 3
Nicolas Jarry vs Yannick Hanfmann
Head-to-Head: Jarry 1-0 Hanfmann
Nicolas Jarry played terrific tennis in February and is on the brink of reaching his first ATP semifinal since July 2019. Jarry has won seven of his last eight matches, with the lone loss coming against Carlos Alcaraz. The home crowd pushed the 27-year-old Chilean in his recent victory over Diego Schwartzman and should also play a significant role in his quarterfinal bout with Yannick Hanfmann. The German has yet to drop a set in four matches in Santiago. He cruised through qualies and is playing a confident brand of tennis. Both players are big servers and should be able to hold serve with relative ease. This match will come down to a few tiebreakers, where I ultimately favor Jarry, who will be backed by the home crowd.
Predictions: Jarry in 3
Dusan Lajovic vs Tomas Martin Etcheverry
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Dusan Lajovic started to find some form in February after having a shaky previous 18 months. The Serbian is 8-2 over his last ten matches, with both losses coming against Carlos Alcaraz. He has a tough quarterfinal clash with young Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverry. The 23-year-old is coming off a three-set victory over Francisco Cerundolo and is playing confidently after reaching his second quarterfinal in the last three weeks. Although I like Martin Etcheverry’s game on the clay, I trust Lajovic much more in high-pressure moments.
Prediction: Lajovic in 2
Sebastian Baez vs Laslo Djere
Head-to-Head: first meeting
No. 3 seed Sebastian Baez squares off against No. 6 seed Laslo Djere in the match of the day in Santiago. After struggling mightily during the back half of 2022, Baez has seemed to turned a corner. He is 7-2 in February and is coming off a 6-4 6-3 thrashing of countryman favorite Cristian Garin. Baez loves the clay and seems to trouble any opponent he plays on the surface. Djere is also a fan of the clay, which makes this matchup all the more interesting. I would be surprised if this match did not go the distance, but when it matters most, I give the advantage to the Argentine. There is something magical about Baez during this South American swing.
Prediction: Baez in 3
