As always, we here at LWOT are offering our predictions for every match, including Dominic Thiem vs Marcos Giron. But who will come out on top?
ATP Gijon Day 3 Predictions
Tommy Paul vs Nicolas Alvarez Varona
Head-to-head: first meeting
After besting 16-year-old Martin Landaluce 6-3 6-0 in the first round, Tommy Paul is looking to take down another young Spaniard on their home soil. 21-year-old Nicolas Alvarez Varona advanced through qualifiers before besting Marco Trungelliti 1-6 6-3 6-0 in his opener at the ATP Gijon Open. It was Alvarez Varona’s first tour-level victory. Paul is having a career year in 2022. He achieved a career high ranking of world #28 three weeks ago. The American combines very consistent groundstrokes with off-the-charts athleticism. He is not often a player who losses to opponents ranked this far below than him so expect Paul to take down the Spaniard in straight sets.
Prediction: Paul in 2

Arthur Rinderknech vs Constant Lestienne
Head-to-head: Rinderknech 1-1 Lestienne
Frenchmen Arthur Rinderknech and Constant Lestienne are set to square off with a quarterfinal spot in Gijon on the line. The two have split their only two meetings, both of which were competitive matches. Both have been playing solid tennis over the past few months. Rinderknech holds a 10-4 record since mid-August. Lestienne is 14-4 over that same span. I expect a very competitive three-set match between Rinderknech and Lestienne. Give the slight edge to Rinderknech who has proven to be a more consistent server in big moments.
Prediction: Rinderknech in 3

Pablo Carreno Busta vs Thiago Monteiro
Head-to-head: Carreno Busta 1-0 Monteiro
Pablo Carreno Busta starts his ATP Gijon Open campaign with a second-round match against Thiago Monteiro. The Spaniard bested Monteiro 6-4 6-3 on the clay of Bastad back in 2018. Monteiro has very little by way of history on indoor hard courts, securing his first victory on the surface in the first round against Benjamin Bonzi. Carreno Busta currently sits at 14th in the Singles Race and has an outside shot at receiving a bid to Turin with a very strong next month. Monteiro is a solid player, but he does not have the weapons to hurt the Spaniard in this one.
Prediction: Carreno Busta in 2
