Jannik Sinner takes on qualifier Christopher Eubanks in the second round of the US Open, we have predictions for every day 4 match at the final Grand Slam of the year in New York from our panelists.
Jannik Sinner vs Christopher Eubanks
Damian Kust: Christopher Eubanks said after qualifying that he feels like he really belongs in the main draw (compared to his previous appearances) and it shows in how he’s playing right now. He might not have enough baseline quality to beat Jannik Sinner, but if he serves well, he can keep it fairly close. Sinner in 4
Shane Black: I believe Jannik Sinner gained a lot of confidence in his round one, five-set victory over Daniel Altmaier. He problem-solved on-court which should help prepare him for the rest of the tournament. Christopher Eubanks picked up his first career Grand Slam win in round one. I believe his 2022 US Open run ends here. Sinner in 3
Cameron Norrie vs Joao Sousa
Damian: Cameron Norrie has an excellent draw to go deep at the US Open this year. Joao Sousa got a rare win in what’s been a rough couple of months, but it will take a lot more improvement for him to trouble the seventh seed here. Norrie in 3
Shane: Cameron Norrie has been one of the most consistent players on tour all season. He very rarely loses a match against someone ranked as low as Sousa. Norrie has won both their previous meetings in straight sets, and I believe he does so once again. Norrie in 3
Frances Tiafoe vs Jason Kubler
Damian: Jason Kubler dropped his form a bit in recent months, but he’s still a very capable player. He’s going to provide a challenge, but Frances Tiafoe is eyeing a deep run here and should be too strong, especially after he easily dismantled Marcos Giron in round one. Tiafoe in 4
Shane: Frances Tiafoe uses the crowd to his advantage on any court he steps on in the world. That is exponentially multiplied when he plays at the US Open. He had fourth round runs at this event in 2020 and 2021 and seems to hold the confidence to do so again. Jason Kubler has had a decent summer, and was ecstatic to pick up his first US Open win since 2018. With that said, Tiafoe should be able to roll through the Aussie in this match. Tiafoe in 4
Roberto Carballes Baena vs Denis Shapovalov
Damian: Roberto Carballes Baena owns a win over Denis Shapovalov at Roland Garros, but their match at the US Open last year was pretty straightforward. Even with the Canadian’s shaky form, you gotta expect the same on a pretty fast hard court. Shapovalov in 4
Shane: Denis Shapovalov won just one match during a two and a half month span this summer. He has since won three of four and is looking to round into form as the tournament progresses. Although Carballes Baena had a solid round one victory over his compatriot Jaume Munar, the Spaniard is not much of a hard court player. If Shapo keeps his energy in the right place, he should win this one. Shapovalov in 4
