ATP Gstaad Day 2 Predictions Including Yannick Hanfmann vs Cristian Garin

Lorenzo Sonego in action ahead of the ATP Gstaad Open.

Day two at the ATP Gstaad Open features eight matches and there should be plenty of exciting first-round action for the fans in Switzerland. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the schedule, including Hugo Gaston vs Dominic Thiem. But who will come out on top?

ATP Gstaad Day 2 Predictions

Nicolas Jarry vs Thiago Monteiro

Head-to-head: Jarry 2-1 Monteiro

Thiago Monteiro has been doing quite well on clay recently, which is no surprise. The Brazilian has always been at his best on the terre battue. He comes into the tournament after winning a seventh Challenger title on clay in Salzburg. His opponent, Nicolas Jarry, is not bad on clay either, and has in fact had an upper hand over Monteiro in their head-to-head. But the Chilean is not the player he once was and, though he did look impressive in the qualifying, expect Monteiro to level the head-to-head in this match.

Benoit Paire vs Elias Ymer

Head-to-head: Ymer 1-0 Paire

Benoit Paire has been going through a rather poor run at the moment, losing five matches on the trot. In truth, it has been a miserable couple of seasons for the Frenchman, with his flashes of brilliance getting more and more sporadic. On the other side of the net, Elias Ymer has given some good performances at clay-court Challengers and is looking increasingly at home on the main tour. These two have played a match before in 2015, in the first round of qualifying at the Australian Open, with Ymer totally dominating to win 6-0 6-4. But the conditions in Gstaad will be very different and one can never say with Paire.

Prediction: Paire in 3

Yannick Hanfmann vs Cristian Garin

Head-to-head: Garin 1-0 Hanfmann

Yannick Hanfmann just isn’t playing well enough to challenge a player like Cristian Garin on a clay court. Garin is a consistent player on clay, who rarely under-performs, and he will surely be full of confidence after his excellent run to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. Hanfmann will be match sharp after coming through the qualifying with three-set wins over Filip Misolic and Zizou Bergs, but he hardly troubled Garin in their only previous meeting on the clay in Hamburg. Getting through the first round shouldn’t be a problem for the Chilean.

Lorenzo Sonego vs Juan Pablo Varillas

Head-to-head: first meeting

Lorenzo Sonego is one of the few players who seems to be equally at home on all three surfaces. He has fallen into a patch of poor right now, but a good match here, a close win there, should bring his momentum back. Don’t expect it to be too long before the Italian is back to his best. Juan Pablo Varillas shows promise on clay, putting together some consistent performances at Challenger-level, and was unlucky to lose to Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first round at this year’s Roland Garros. But though he can be expected to put up a fight here, Sonego should have too much.

Prediction: Sonego in 3
