The WTA closed its grass-court season in London on Saturday, crowning Elena Rybakina as the 2022 Wimbledon champion. These next two weeks are filled with 250 clay-court events, including the Ladies Open Lausanne in Lausanne, Switzerland. #1 seed Danielle Collins will take the court on day two against Swiss wild card Simona Waltert. We at LWOT have the prediction for that match and all other happenings around the grounds of Lausanne.
WTA Lausanne Day 2 Predictions
Cristina Bucsa vs Kristina Mladenovic
Head-to-Head: First meeting
Both Cristina Busca and Kristina Mladenovic currently sit outside of the World’s top 100 and will relish this opportunity to string together some tour-level victories. Busca holds a 2022 record of 29-18 and has been a very solid player this season on the ITF Circuit. She has 13 wins this season on the clay. At 24 years old, I can see Spaniard making a move up the rankings over the next 12 months. I believe she will be too much for the out-of-form Mladenovic.
Prediction: Busca in 3
Varvara Gracheva vs Eva Lys
Head-to-Head: First meeting
#8 seed Varvara Gracheva will take on German youngster Eva Lys in Round 1 in Lausanne. Although Gracheva herself is only 21-year-old, she is currently ranked #60 in the world and has experienced some success on the WTA Tour. The Russian has proven in her young career to be very sound on the clay and I believe she will easily best current World #217 Eva Lys.
Prediction: Gracheva in 2
Nuria Parrizas Diaz vs Petra Martic
Head-to-Head: First meeting
Nuria Parrizas Diaz did not win a match during the grass season and will be very happy to get back to her favorite surface of clay. She takes on veteran Petra Martic who is coming off of a second-week run at Wimbledon before falling to the eventual champion Elena Rybakina. Both players are tough on the clay. I give the slight edge to the Croatian who should be feeling confident in her current form.
Prediction: Martic in 3
Danielle Collins vs Simona Waltert
Head-to-Head: First meeting
Coming off of a Round 1 exit at the All England Club, #1 seed Danielle Collins is looking to get back on track on the clay. Although the American is just 3-3 on the surface this season, she has seen some of her best tour success on the clay. This will be 21-year-old Simona Waltert’s fourth career main draw tour-level match. The other three came in previous years at Lausanne. Waltert has proven to be a very strong clay player on the ITF circuit, but taking on a top-ten opponent in Danielle Collins is a whole different ballgame.
Prediction: Collins in 2
