ATP Madrid Day 2 Best Bets Including Andy Murray & Benoit Paire

Andy Murray Queens

The first-round action gets fully going on Day 2 on the ATP side of the Mutua Madrid Open, giving a full slate of matches to choose from. Let’s take a look at some of the best bets available today.

ATP Madrid Day 2 Best Bets

Alex De Minaur vs Pedro Martinez

I expected De Minaur to be more of a favorite here considering his recent semifinals run in Barcelona. He also reached the third round in his last Madrid appearance. Martinez has not been great outside of his Santiago title, most recently losing to Ilya Ivashka in Barcelona. The Spaniard has never gone past the first round here so, in my view, the line should be around the -350 area, providing tipsters with solid value.

Andy Murray vs Dominic Thiem

On name value, definitely the most exciting match of the day here, a former No. 1 facing a former No. 3. Murray is a two-time champion in Madrid while Thiem is a two-time finalist, reaching at least the semifinals here every year since 2017. 2017 is also the last time Murray played here, only playing one match on clay since his comeback from hip surgery. Thiem’s recent form makes this a tight match though, as the Austrian hasn’t won a match in almost a year and on his comeback has taken losses to Pedro Cachin, John Millman, and Benjamin Bonzi. Thiem’s performances in 2022 place this match at approximately even odds, so Murray’s position as an outsider should provide some value here.

Recommended selection:
Andy Murray ML – 2 units @ +137 (2.37, 137/100)

Benoit Paire vs Diego Schwartzman

To end with a bolder bet, I am taking Benoit Paire to pull off the upset here. The Frenchman has been poor over the past three years but his successful qualifying campaign past Brandon Nakashima and Federico Coria tells us he cares. Schwartzman is in good form, coming off Monte Carlo quarterfinals and Barcelona semifinals. The Madrid conditions are unique though and Schwartzman’s results here have been mediocre here over the years. The Argentine also leads the head-to-head, though all of their previous clay meetings have gone to three sets. Betting Paire to win a set is already decent value but I believe there is merit to taking a swing at the full win here given the odds set.

Recommended selection:
Paire ML –  1 unit @ +400 (5, 4/1)
