A number of qualifiers will be looking to make their mark in the WTA Miami Open main draw as first round play continues on the second day of the tournament from the Sunshine State. We have predictions for every round one match including Naomi Osaka’s match.
Xinyu Wang vs Aliaksandra Sasnovich
Sasnovich dispatched Wang when they met to open the season on hard courts, the qualifier Wang didn’t drop a set in two matches, Sasnovich has a WTA final and a quarterfinal on her resume this season and will be looking to rack up some wins here. I would be surprised if Wang can improve in this matchup. Sasnovich in 2
Lucia Bronzetti vs Ajla Tomljanovic
Bronzetti enters the draw as a lucky loser, she’s been in the qualifying stages of all her tournaments of all her tournaments this year with mixed results, including a run to the second round of the Australian Open as a qualifier. Tomljanovic has yet to advance past the second round of a WTA main draw this year and is struggling a bit. Bronzetti seems to be playing better in what looks like an even matchup. Bronzetti in 2
Clara Burel vs Magdalena Frech
Burel took a few weeks off and is just 1-4 on the season, Frech qualified for this tournament and also made the Indian Wells main draw as a lucky loser where she won her first round main draw match. Frech isn’t a world beater but it’s hard to see Burel turning her form around so quickly compared to recent weeks. Frech in 2
Lauren Davis vs Yue Yuan
A battle of qualifiers, Yue won an ITF tournament to open the year but has struggled ever since, Davis was a quarterfinalist in Adelaide, and playing stateside, should have some upside on these hard courts. I’ll go with the American player to take advantage of home cooking and get the win. Davis in 2
