A week of excellent tennis at the WTA Luxembourg Open concludes with what should be a very watchable final between Jelena Ostapenko and Clara Tauson. Both young women go for their shots and are obviously in good form and acquainted with the conditions. The question is who will go on to lift the trophy?
WTA Luxembourg Final Prediction
Jelena Ostapenko vs Clara Tauson
Head-to-head: first meeting
The key battle that will decide this final will likely be between the Ostapenko return against the Tauson serve. The Dane has held serve over 80% of the time this week but the Latvian has an incredible record on return in Luxembourg. She has broken more often than her opponents have held, but I can’t see this pattern continuing against Tauson.
The Dane has very big and very clean strokes, both on serve and off the ground. She has also had the more difficult route to the final in my opinion. Seeing off the fourth seed Alexandrova in three, then the talented Bouzkova, and yesterday defeating world #40 Marketa Vondrousova in three sets. The youngster withstood the pressure at the end of that set very well. She also has a very recent tournament win to her name defeating Emma Raducanu in the WTA Challenger Chicago event just before the US Open.
Ostapenko is, of course, a Grand Slam champion. However, that triumph at Roland-Garros in 2017 seemed to be an anchor rather than a trampoline to further success. She did win here in Luxembourg in 2019 though and I’m sure that will really help in this final.
I can understand why Ostapenko should be favorite based upon ranking and reputation but this match is more likely to be on Tauson’s racket. From that perspective with the Dane being on form I am edging towards a slight upset in the WTA Luxembourg.
Prediction: Tauson in 3
