The first round is behind all of the remaining players at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Tennis tournament. Just four match wins stand away from players and an elusive gold medal. Alexander Zverev, Marin Cilic, and Daniil Medvedev are among the names still alive in round 2, we also have predictions for matches featuring Novak Djokovic and Fabio Fognini.
Alexander Zverev vs Daniel Elahi Galan
Yesh Ginsburg: Zverev has been gifted with a very fortunate draw in this tournament. He won’t have any trouble here. Zverev in 2
Steen Kirby: Galan occasionally turns in high quality performances but unless Zverev fails to show up for this match he clearly has the upper hand. Zverev’s game should prove too much for Galan. Zverev in 2
John Millman vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina
Yesh: Davidovich Fokina is constantly improving, on all surfaces. Millman can make this tough with big serving, but the Spaniard should control the rallies. Davidovich Fokina in 2
Steen: Both players entered this tournament enduring some struggles, especially Millman, but a round 1 win is just the antidote in terms of finding form. Davidovich Fokina is a slightly better player, but Millman has a tendency to rise to the occasion when playing for his country, and the surface suits his game well. Millman in 3
Sumit Nagal vs Daniil Medvedev
Yesh: Nagal did well to win a match. He won’t be able to come close to Medvedev. Medvedev in 2
Steen: Medvedev was challenged by Bublik in the opening round, Nagal is still at a massive disadvantage though, if Medvedev loses it would be one of the biggest upsets of the year. Medvedev in 2
Marin Cilic vs Pablo Carreno Busta
Yesh: This is a great second-round match. Carreno Busta is much more consistent, but if Cilic finds his range on the groundstrokes he can beat anyone. Cilic in 3
Steen: Cilic has a 4-0 h2h edge, Carreno Busta is in great form, this match should be worth tuning in for. Carreno Busta had a much easier time in the opening round and he’s the more reliable player these days, still that 4-0 h2h edge has to count for something. Cilic has a chance to rise to the occasion here and bring back the high level of tennis he used to consistently provide. Cilic in 3
