ATP Umag Day 2 Predictions
Aljaz Bedene vs Marco Cecchinato
It’s very under the radar, but Bedene is playing really well right now. He’s trying to make his way back into the Top 50 and looks well to do it. Other than a few impressive runs (like reaching the final in Parma right before the French Open), Cecchinato has not been playing well this season. It’s hard to trust inconsistency, so Bedene gets my pick here.
Prediction: Bedene in 2
Gianluca Mager vs Pedro Martinez
Mager is solid and consistent and really likes the clay. Martinez, on the other hand, is far less consistent–but he often looks primed for a breakout run. He has some impressive wins the last few months, though he definitely needs to work on stringing strong sets and matches together. Ultimately, though, Mager is just too solid at the moment for Martinez’s consistent level–but I expect good things from the Spaniard soon.
Prediction: Mager in 3
Salvatore Caruso vs Andrej Martin
Both of these players are just outside the Top 100, but Caruso has a bit more of a pedigree. Martin is playing some of the best tennis of his career, so expect a good one here. Caruso has done very poorly recently, but he’s coming off a successful week at a Challenger and looks to be finding his form again.
Prediction: Caruso in 3
