Wimbledon Day 6 Men’s Predictions
Jordan Thompson vs Ilya Ivashka
Anurag:
The Belarussian raked up some impressive wins in Munich and Eastbourne, but his two matches at Wimbledon were relatively easy. There is not much to separate the two players – both of them have big service games. This Wimbledon could prove to be Australian’s shortest path up the rankings table as he bids for a career-first place in the second week. He was in fierce form as he displayed a very high first serve accuracy and fired 39 winners in his win over the dangerous Kei Nishikori. Expect the Australian to move ahead.
Prediction: Thompson in 5
Jack:
After winning his first match at Wimbledon against Casper Ruud, Thompson backed it up with a victory over Kei Nishikori. Ivashka is playing his most impressive brand of aggressive tennis in his career but the gravity of Thompson’s wins will give him plenty of confidence. It will go down to the wire but Thompson will clinch it.
Prediction: Thompson in 5
Damian:
Ivashka is in great form right now and he should make the most out of this opportunity. Thompson is very solid but rather unexceptional and he doesn’t have a shot of the quality of Ivashka’s serve. The Belarusian has a brilliant chance here and I believe he will power through to the next round, which would be by far the best result of his career.
Prediction: Ivashka in 4
James Duckworth vs Lorenzo Sonego
Anurag:
This is an intriguing pairing. Sonego plays an all-around game. Duckworth has a slice sharp as scalpel. The Australian is playing the tournament of his life. He managed to stop the :Querrey Express” with an astounding first serve percentage. He may have caught the American off-guard on a bad day, but nonetheless, his service game could make the difference against a clay-courter like Sonego.
Prediction: Duckwowrth in 5
Jack:
Duckworth is into the first third round of his career with an impressive win over Sam Querrey. Sonego is another kettle of fish, however–where Duckworth could beat Querrey from the baseline, Sonego’s game is slightly superior in pretty much every department. Expect the in-form player to roll this one.
Prediction: Sonego in 3
Damian:
Sonego was rather expected here, but Duckworth’s win over Querrey came as a huge surprise. This is a really good chance for both but there’s a lot more on the line for Duckworth, who’s never made a third round at a Grand Slam before. I’d expect the power-hitting of the Italian to prevail but the Australian knows his way around a grass court too. Should be a fun low-key match.
Prediction: Sonego in 4
Nick Kyrgios vs Felix Auger-Aliassime
Anurag:
This should be an enthralling matchup. The Canadian leads their head-to-head 1-0 on grass. The Australian comes into this match off a clinical win over Gianluca Mager in the second round. The Canadian may be the in-form player, but expect Kyrgios to steal a thriller in five sets.
Prediction: Kyrgios in 5
Jack:
In true Kyrgios fashion, the Australian knocked Ugo Humbert out of the first-round in five sets despite not playing for six months prior. Auger-Aliassime is playing some superb tennis, reaching the final in Stuttgart and beating Federer in Halle, but there’s a chip on Kyrgios’s shoulder–he wants to prove a lot of people wrong so his talent and stubbornness will see him through.
Prediction: Kyrgios in 4
Damian:
It’s Kyrgios’s first event in over five months and at some point, this is going to catch up to him. Auger-Aliassime is in the middle of a fantastic grass-court season and has a game behind his serve that should be a good match for his opponent. The sheer natural talent only lasts as much and Kyrgios can’t just show up and make a deep run. It won’t be straightforward, but the Canadian should find a way to prove that.
Prediction: Auger-Aliassime in 4
Daniil Medvedev vs Marin Cilic
Anurag:
Althguoh Cilic has hauled a 9-1 record this grass season and also amassed a title Stuttgart, he is not quite the force he was a few years ago. Both are serving well, but Medvedev’s recent phenomenal run on grass will certainly weigh in as he should prove to be too much for the Croat to handle.
Prediction: Medvedev in 4
Jack:
This match should be a treat. Both players won grass court titles in the run-up to Wimbledon, Cilic showing he shouldn’t be underestimated and Medvedev finally showing his game is as effective as it should be on the grass. There will be tight sets but Medvedev should have the mental edge over his opponent.
Prediction: Medvedev in 4
Damian:
Cilic would be a tempting pick before the tournament, but the way the Croat has struggled with Caruso and Bonzi wasn’t convincing at all. Medvedev on the other hand, has been serving great, defending like a machine, and making his opponents go nuts with the low-skidding flat balls. Cilic’s serve can keep it close but it likely won’t win it.
Prediction: Medvedev in 4
