It’s an All-American showdown in round 2 at Wimbledon when Taylor Fritz takes on Steve Johnson. Gael Monfils also looks to reach the third round on day 4 at Wimbledon. Our panelists have all your predictions for the day’s play including Roger Federer’s match.
Gael Monfils vs Pedro Martinez
Damian Kust: Badly out of form and on his worst surface, but Monfils somehow clutched out a win against O’Connell, despite requiring three days to finish. The draw is kind but nothing is an automatic win for the Frenchman at this point in time. However, with how little experience the Spaniard has on grass, maybe Monfils can find another tough win. Monfils in 4
Yesh Ginsburg: Monfils hasn’t been in good form in a while, but his game works so well on grass, and he’s been gifted a very outmatched opponent here. Monfils in 3
Grigor Dimitrov vs Alexander Bublik
Damian: Dimitrov seems to have recovered from the back injury that forced him to retire at the French Open. It might not matter though if Bublik is in the same disposition as against Kukushkin in the opening round. The Kazakh blasted 45 winners to 13 unforced errors and eliminated his countryman in just 82 minutes. He’s extremely mercurial but if Dimitrov doesn’t show anything special, he might be in trouble. Bublik in 5
Yesh: Dimitrov looked as solid as ever in his opening match, aside from a bit of poor play early. Meanwhile, Bublik looks great, and he likes the surface. Expect a great match here. Dimitrov in 5
Alex Bolt vs Cameron Norrie
Damian: This is more interesting than it seems. Norrie is in the middle of a fantastic season, while Bolt caught fire winning the Nottingham Challenger and locked up a wildcard for Wimbledon in that way. Norrie’s Queen’s Club run was so good that he should prevail, but an opponent like Bolt who will feel like he’s got nothing to lose can be very dangerous. Norrie in 4
Yesh: Cameron Norrie is in such great form. Bolt might be able to stay in his service games and push for tiebreaks, but it’s hard to pick against the Brit here. He’s just too solid. Norrie in 4
Taylor Fritz vs Steve Johnson
Damian: Despite undergoing surgery at the beginning of June, Fritz managed to win the race to get healthy for Wimbledon and played a really good match to beat Nakashima. He now faces another American in a match that could really go both ways. Perhaps Fritz’s lack of training catches up to him. Johnson in 5
Yesh: This all-American matchup should be a fun one. Neither player has a massive serve, but both back up their good serves very well. Expect tiebreaks as long as no one cracks under pressure. Johnson in 5
