WTA Bad Homburg Final Prediction – Angelique Kerber vs Katerina Siniakova

Angelique Kerber in action at the WTA Bad Homburg Open.

It’s fair to say that this wasn’t exactly the final many predicted at the start of the week, but just a few days away from the start of Wimbledon there is plenty resting on the outcome of this match. But who will come out on top at the WTA Bad Homburg Open?

WTA Bad Homburg Open Prediction

Angelique Kerber vs Katerina Siniakova

Head-to-head: Kerber 4-1 Siniakova

There is no doubting Angelique Kerber’s talent. The German has proved that she has plenty of ability over the course of her career hence her three Grand Slam titles but for a while now it has looked like her best days were beyond her. Whilst a disappointing clay-court season was somewhat inevitable given her history on the terre battue, it’s the results beforehand which were worrying. That includes a routine first-round loss at the Australian Open.

But great champions can’t be counted out for long. Almost out of nowhere, Kerber has turned things around this week in her home country, and it’s not just making the final which has been impressive, it’s the fact she beat former two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the semifinals in a final-set tiebreak. That match will almost certainly have given her a huge confidence boost.

On the other side of the net, Katerina Siniakova arrived at the WTA Bad Homburg Open having not won three consecutive matches on the WTA tour since February last year. She also did not have much grass-court pedigree, having reached the third round at Wimbledon just once in five attempts. That being said, she did win her third Grand Slam doubles title in Paris, which surely boosted her confidence, something her singles career is desperately needing given her poor results in recent years.

After rain, Kerber had to play two three setters on Friday to make the final whilst her younger opponent won both her matches fairly comfortably. Under normal circumstances given the head-to-head, the German winning their only grass-court meeting and simply being the better player when playing well, the result would be inevitable. But given the situation, this should be closer than that. Maybe Siniakova can make the 33-year-old feel the effects of her exertions on Friday. But Kerber should still get the win here.

Prediction: Kerber in 3
