Fan favorite Angelique Kerber takes to the court on day 2 of the WTA Bad Homburg grass court tournament, with Alize Cornet another of the notable players in action. Here is your look at everything day 2 has to offer, we also have predictions for matches featuring Petra Kvitova and Sloane Stephens.
Angelique Kerber vs Ekaterina Yashina
The former world #1 Kerber is just 16-17 over the last two seasons and hasn’t lifted a title since Wimbledon 2018. Her record on grass is excellent though with a Wimbledon title (2018), a Wimbledon final (2016), and also an Eastbourne final (2019) that was her last WTA final on tour. Most recently she was bounced out in the second round of the Berlin grass court tournament by Vika Azarenka. Yashina has a much thinner resume, the career ITF player is making her WTA tour main draw debut at age 27, she’s had some good ITF results, and qualifying here is a confidence boosting moment, but still Kerber would be a significant favorite to win this match. Alize Cornet vs Arantxa Rus
The Berlin semifinalist Cornet takes on the Bol finalist Rus in a battle of players in good form. Both players have tons of experience, including with grass court tennis, but Cornet’s level looks slightly higher, this should be competitive, but Cornet enters this first round match expecting victory. Anna Blinkova vs Clara Tauson
Blinkova reached the semis in Bol after struggling this season, but was bounced in the opening round qualifiers in Berlin. Tauson is having a career best year and sits at an all time high ranking though her resume is lacking on the grass. Blinkova’s game doesn’t appear to translate well to grass at the moment and I’ll go with Tauson in a tough to predict match. Tauson in 3
Anna Zaja vs Ann Li
Zaja is another player who makes her living on the ITF tour and will be happy to be in a WTA main draw after failing to find success on the WTA Tour any time previously. Li has put together a credible season though a qualifying round 1 exit in Berlin is not the best result. Li should bounce back and defeat the home player in this match though. Li in 2
