On Day 4 at the WTA Volvo Car Open in Charleston, sixteen women will compete for the quarterfinal spots. Who will move on to the final eight at this WTA 500 event? We predict all eight of the day’s matches–four in this article, and four in a second article.
WTA Charleston Day 4 Predictions
Garbine Muguruza vs Yulia Putintseva
Putintseva is a strong player who has been playing well recently. Unfortunately for her, Garbine Muguruza appears to be quickly returning to her peak form. The Spaniard might not be the best in the world, like she was five years ago, but she’s in that elite class right now. Putintseva does really well at keeping opponents out of their comfort zones, but Muguruza will eventually find her way through.
Prediction: Muguruza in 3
Alize Cornet vs Ons Jabeur
Both of these women are playing well right now. Cornet probably has a higher upside than Jabeur, but the Tunisian is just so good at playing her game consistently and taking advantage of any mistakes her opponents make. This should be a very tight battle, and I will give the tiniest of edges to the Frenchwoman.
Prediction: Cornet in 3
Coco Gauff vs Lauren Davis
The rise of Coco Gauff continues. I am personally very often guilty of underestimating the teenage future superstar, but she has every advantage in this matchup. She is playing better, hits the ball harder, and covers the court better. Davis will force her younger compatriot to play well, but Gauff seems more than up to the challenge.
Prediction: Gauff in 2
Ashleigh Barty vs Shelby Rogers
Rogers was trailing Amanda Anisimova 1-6 1-4 in her last match before Anisimova injured herself and couldn’t play nearly as well after that. The American is very lucky to reach this round, but she is now up against the absolute force that is Ash Barty. This match won’t be close.
Prediction: Barty in 2
