Frances Tiafoe and Benoit Paire are among the big names in action on day 3 of the ATP Santiago tournament as we predict all of Wednesday’s matches.
Laslo Djere vs Pedro Sousa
Sousa’s upset of Leonardo Mayer in round 1 was surprisingly routine, and that will give him confidence against the higher ranked Djere. Djere comes off the quarterfinals in Buenos Aires and should be fresh. Given their resumes over the last few months, Djere remains the favorite even if he’s challenged. Djere in 3
Facundo Bagnis vs Frances Tiafoe
Tiafoe will be happy with this matchup given he owns a 2-0 h2h against Bagnis, Bagnis and Tiafoe both had tough opening round wins in 3 sets. The Argentine is 7-2 since the Cordoba tournament started this ATP South American swing, while Tiafoe is looking to improve upon his second round exit in Buenos Aires. Despite the h2h advantage for the American, Bagnis should be a bit better on clay and I’m more confident in his form. Bagnis in 3
Federico Delbonis vs Andrej Martin
Delbonis is 3-1 against Martin in their h2h, Delbonis upset of Jaume Munar was impressive, Martin dominated a tired Francisco Cerundolo in straights. This will be close, but Delbonis is slightly better positioned based on the h2h. Delbonis in 2
Benoit Paire vs Holger Rune
Paire has been struggling, with just one match win on the season (in Cordoba). Rune has 4 match wins just this tournament including a dominant performance against Sebastian Baez in straight sets in the opening round. The win was Rune’s first on the ATP Tour, and he has a great chance of backing it up with an upset of the seeded Paire. Paire will be lacking confidence and Rune’s game will trouble him. Rune in 2
