22 American men competed at this year’s US Open at the singles level. With an open draw since Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer weren’t playing, the Americans tried their luck. Although, they seemed to not take advantage of playing a home field event.

Big Hope But Same Results

Again and again, the American men had a big hope that one would stand out and go deep into the tournament. One could think of John Isner, Taylor Fritz, Reilly Opelka, and Frances Tiafoe to lead the charge for American tennis. Sadly, that wasn’t the case again at this year’s US Open. John Isner was eliminated in the first round in five sets by fellow countryman Steve Johnson. Reilly Opelka also lost in the first round, to a tougher opponent in David Goffin in four sets. Taylor Fritz was eliminated in the third round against Denis Shapovalov in a five-set thriller. He had a commanding lead and was serving for the match but just couldn’t finish it. Frances Tiafoe got trashed by Daniil Medvedev in straight sets in the fourth round.

Andy Roddick Was The Last American To Win The US Open

Furthermore, the last time an American tennis player went deep into the US Open was Andy Roddick who won it back in 2003. It’s been 17 years, and counting, since the success of an American going far at this tournament. Year after year the Americans have seen the success of abroad tennis players in their home Grand Slam.

In spite of great young talent like J.J. Wolf, Brandon Nakashima, and Maxime Cressy, it wasn’t enough for an American success story this year. Jack Sock came back from injury and wasn’t in much rhythm despite playing in World TeamTennis. He seemed like the biggest hope for American tennis since he had a big year in 2017. However, 2018 was a bad year for him and he has struggled with injuries and form since.

Women Have Been More Successful

In contrast, for the women it is a completely different story as Sloane Stephens won the US Open in 2017, beating American Madison Keys, and the Williams sisters having plenty of success at this tournament. It is clear that the women have done their job and keep succeeding as we are seeing more of them in last eight at this years US Open.

In conclusion, male American tennis players have failed to deliver at the US Open. Sam Querrey was the last American to have recent success at a Grand Slam tournament in 2017 when he made it to the semifinals, but it was at Wimbledon. Hopefully the men can raise their level and make a deep run at future US Opens.
