ATP Montpellier Semifinal Predictions
David Goffin vs Vasek Pospisil
Head to Head: 1-0 Goffin
David Goffin has reached the semifinals without losing a set. Goffin has won two tight second tiebreakers to win his matches, one against Alexander Bublik and one against Pierre-Hugues Herbert. Vasek Pospisil has also not lost a set on his way to semifinals. He did benefit from a Richard Gasquet retirement in the quarterfinals, however. Pospisil has yet to drop serve in this tournament.
Goffin leads the head to head 1-0 (excluding Hopman Cup), having beaten Pospisil in a third set tiebreaker in 2013 Cincinnati. Goffin has the consistency, ball striking, and counterpunching ability to get into Pospisil service games. While it won’t be easy with the way Pospisil is serving, expect Goffin to get his shot in the final.
Prediction: Goffin in 3
Gael Monfils vs Filip Krajinovic
Head to Head: 1-0 Monfils
After a tough three-set match with Adrian Mannarino in the round of 16, Gael Monfils was able to get through Norbert Gombos more easily in the quarterfinals. Filip Krajinovic has won all three of his matches in Montpellier in two sets. Krajinovic had a comfortable victory over Gregoire Barrere in the quarterfinals.
Monfils leads the head to head 1-0, having beaten Krajinovic in three sets in the 2015 Miami Open. However, the indoor hard court conditions in Montpellier is better for Krajinovic’s game than Monfils’. Monfils, who is from France, will have the crowd on his side, but Krajinovic has beaten two Frenchman in his three matches this week. Monfils’ ability to extend rallies and counterpunch is special, but Krajinovic’s clean ball striking and ability to pressure Monfils from the baseline will be the difference in this match.
