The 2020 ATP tennis season kicks off with Day 1 of the ATP Cup in Australia on Friday. We’re here at LWOT to give our thoughts on the upcoming matches. We have predictions for four matches in this article, plus four more predictions.
ATP Cup Day 1 Predictions
John Isner vs Casper Ruud
This could be a great match. Isner’s troubles outside of America are well-known, but he should play well here. The surface will suit him, and his serve will get him through. As long as he can keep in rhythm in his first match of the year, he’ll be fine.
Prediction: Isner in 3
David Goffin vs Radu Albot
Albot had the best year of his career in 2019, and he looks ready to turn a corner. I don’t think he’s quite at the level of reaching the final rounds of Majors or Masters, but he’ll do well in 2020. Goffin, on the other hand, is the type of player who can reach the final rounds of Majors. He’s just too consistent and too solid. Goffin will win.
Prediction: Goffin in 2
Felix Auger-Aliassime vs Michail Pervolarakis
This Greece vs Canada matchup is not quite a fair one, and it’s all down to this matchup. Greece’s top player (Tsitsipas) is on par with Shapovalovand Auger-Aliassime, but Pervolarakis is not. This will be an easy win for the rising Canadian star to start off 2020.
Prediction: Auger-Aliassime in 2
Nick Kyrgios vs Jan-Lennard Struff
Struff is a decent and consistent player. Kyrgios is an excellent player and the opposite of consistent. When he wants to be on top of his game, he should beat just about everyone in the world. Of course, he’s on top of his game whenever he chooses to be, and it’s impossible to guess if he will choose that. I think that he’ll want to win for Australia, but there’s a chance he just hands away the second set if he gets bored.
Prediction: Kyrgios in 2
