Semifinal Saturday in Luxembourg should be good with a blockbuster match between Jelena Ostapenko and Anna Blinkova. Find out who we think moves on to the final in Luxembourg as the WTA season winds down.
WTA Luxembourg Semifinal Predictions
Elena Rybakina vs Julia Goerges
H2H- Georges 1-0
20-year-old Elena Rybakina has put together a nice season with a 57-20 record right now. Even though a lot of her wins earlier in the year came at a lower level, it’s hard not to consider her as someone who we can see breakthrough at the tour-level next year. She won comfortably today against Laura Siegemund, Rybakina looked good right from the start winning the opening set 6-0, and only faced 1 breakpoint the whole match.
Julia Goerges has come back from a set down in every single match that she’s played this week. After dropping the opening set 6-1 to Monica Puig, she bounced back nicely winning the next two sets 6-2 6-3 to advance to Saturday’s semifinals.
If Rybakina comes out of the gates the way she did today, I think she can get an early lead on Goerges who’s gotten off to slow starts all week. I can see this one playing out the same way her other matches have this week.
Prediction: Goerges in 3
Jelena Ostapenko vs Anna Blinkova
H2H- First Meeting
I don’t know if Anna Blinkova can play any better than what we’ve seen this week from her so far. The Russian is into the semifinals without dropping a set and has barely lost any games throughout the week. The week after losing to Naomi Osaka in New York at the US Open, Blinkova played an ITF event in New Haven, Connecticut and won the title, defeating Christina Mchale, Jennifer Brady, and Lauren Davis en route. While it was her best result of the season, this week just might top that.
Jelena Ostapenko certainly looks like she made the right choice accepting a wildcard into Luxembourg. The Latvian started off the week with two tough wins over Caty Mcnally, and #1 seed Elise Mertens. She had her first easy win today defeating qualifier Antonia Lottner 6-1 6-1 to advance to the semifinals.
This one is tough to predict as both of them are really playing well right now, but it’s just hard to go against Anna Blinkova right now. Even though Ostapenko is only one year older, she’s the more experienced player, but I’ll go with Anna Blinkova in her current form.
Prediction: Blinkova in 3
