Camila Giorgi reached the final of Washington before losing back-to-back first round matches in Montreal and Cincinnati. At the WTA Bronx Open in New York, she is hoping to reassert herself before the US Open. The only remaining question: Can she overcome the spirited challenge of Andrea Petkovic?

Alize Cornet vs Zhu Lin

Alize Cornet and Lin Zhu have never played each other. Cornet turned pro in 2006 and Zhu in 2012, but their paths never crossed. Cornet brings much greater historical success. She is title-less in 2019, but she is also fresh and in good form. Zhu’s form has also been strong. After battling through qualifying she played a tough two set match against Yulia Putintseva to set up her meeting with Cornet. The key to that victory was her steely performance in the first set tiebreak which Zhu managed to win 7-2. Cornet’s canny court craft will likely prove enough to halt Zhu’s excellent run in New York.

Bernarda Pera vs Barbora Strycova

Bernarda Pera’s 6-0, 6-2 procession over Veronika Kundermetova proved she is a player capable of a high level of tennis. However, Barbora Strycova is a much more daunting challenge. Strycova won their only previous meeting at last year’s Australian Open, 6-2, 6-2. Though Strycova is almost ten years older than Pera and has had most of her success on the doubles court, she is an all-around better player than Pera. Strycova should have little trouble dispatching her younger opponent.

Katerina Siniakova vs Anastasia Potapova
Head to head: Siniakova 0 Potapova 0
Katerina Siniakova and Anastasia Potapova have never met on the WTA tour. This is unsurprising as Potapova is only 18 years old. She displayed nerves beyond her years in a gutsy three set win over Alison Van Uytvanck. Siniakova is likely to be too strong an opponent for her to continue her run. But, regardless of the match’s outcome, Potapova’s week in New York will be filled with positive memories. Siniakova, only 23, but a practiced winner, can win by playing her game on her terms.

Camila Giorgi vs Andrea Petkovic
Head to head: Petkovic 2 Giorgi 3
Camila Giorgi and Andrea Petkovic have a curious rivalry. Giorgi won the pair’s first three matches and Petkovic their two most recent meetings. The two have not played each other since Petkovic handily dispatched Giorgi in the round of 32 in Dubai in 2016. Giorgi has been in good form. Both women won their Monday matches comfortably, but the commanding stamp Giorgi put on her 6-3, 6-2 victory over Margarita Gasparyan had more portent to it than Petkovic’s assured if unspectacular win over Zhang Shuai.
