Day 2 of the WTA Bronx Open will be jam packed with excellent match ups. Kaia Kanepi will take to the court hoping to rekindle the magic that took her from qualifying to the quarters there two years ago at the US Open. We also have predictions for four more Day 2 matches.

Magda Linette vs Kaia Kanepi
It is impossible to predict the outcome when Kaia Kanepi is involved. In 2017 at the age of 32, she reached quarterfinals of the US Open after playing through qualifying. Kanepi is capable of magic. She has also struggled for years with serious injuries which have only taken a greater toll on her over time. Magda Linette is a strong player and if Kanepi shows any signs of weakness will be poised to pounce. Kanepi, however, has again battled through qualifying to reach the main draw of a tournament. While the New York Open may not have the prestige of a grand slam, she has already shown that anything is possible when she plays herself into form.

Laura Siegemund vs Mihaela Buzarnescu
Mihaela Buzarnescu won her first and, to date, only singles title last summer at the Silicon Valley Classic. Since then she has posted decent if not spectacular results and seen her ranking slip from the mid 20s to the mid 50s. Her opponent Laura Siegemund despite claiming a mixed doubles title at the US Open has struggled to win singles titles on the WTA tour. Her 2019 has been unremarkable and the New York Open is unlikely to be a turning point.

Katerina Siniakova vs Y.F. Wang
In the last two years, Katerina Siniakova has claimed victories against most top women’s players not named Serena Williams. Johanna Konta, Simona Halep, and, most recently, Naomi Osaka, have all fallen against her. Y.F. Wang does not have the power or consistency to take on Siniakova. When her game is firing, Siniakova hits blistering returns and feather-light drop shots at will. She will not need that level of precision to win against Wang, but her game should be enought to subdue and dispatch Wang in straight sets.

Fiona Ferro vs Viktorija Golubic
Much like Karolina Muchova and Viktoria Kuzmova, Viktorija Golubic and Fiona Ferro are ranking-mates. The two women, number 73 and 72 in the world respectively, have little to distinguish them. Ferro is four years younger and Golubic has, in the past, been ranked slightly higher. On court the two are evenly matched. The one time the two met, Ferro narrowly defeated Golubic, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in Australia. Ferro’s victory in Lusanne in July is a good indication of the current strength of her game. While that tournament was contested on clay rather than hard courts, the confidence from a tournament win barely a month in the past will still be present for Ferro.
