ATP Winston-Salem Open Day 2 Predictions

Duckhee Lee vs Henri Laaksonen

Head-to-head: Never played

Here’s a tennis fact very few fans know: Duckhee Lee is deaf. Lee has built an incredible career, relatively speaking, overcoming his disability. He has also had strong success on the Challenger circuit. The low entry cutoff this tournament, because of its larger draw and overlap with US Open qualifiers, gives players like Lee a tremendous opportunity. I think he’s a slight underdog in this matchup, but I freely admit that it’s just awesome to see Lee succeed. How can anyone pick against that?
Prediction: Lee in 3

Marcos Giron vs Roberto Carballes Baena

Head-to-head: Never played

Anything can happen the week before a Slam, and Giron does have some home-court advantage here, but Carballes Baena is just a better player here. He will frustrate Giron and eventually run away with it, even if it starts close.
Prediction: Carballes Baena in 2

Antoine Hoang vs Damir Dzumhur

Head-to-head: 1-0 Hoang

Hoang has just barely cracked the Top 100, and is having a breakthrough year, relatively speaking. Dzumhur is a consistent journeyman, always hovering around that ranking. This should be a good match, though the hard courts probably suit the more-experienced Dzumhur a bit more.
Prediction: Dzumhur in 3

Amir Weintraub vs Bjorn Fratangelo

Head-to-head: Never played

The pair actually played once, at Wimbledon qualifying four years ago. Fratangelo won that match in straight sets. Weintraub is trying to continue his return to tennis from a two-and-a-half year injury absence. He lost in the first round of qualifying at Newport, which has his first match since a Challenger in January 2017. Weintraub was once a Top 150 player near Fratangelo’s level, but he’ll probably take a long time to get back to that form, if he ever can.
Prediction: Fratangelo in 2

Casper Ruud vs Lloyd Harris

Head-to-head: Never played

Harris has already won a match here, and must be excited since his strong performance against Roger Federer at Wimbledon. He is improving, but it might not be enough to get through Ruud. This should be a great match. Don’t be surprised if it’s the best of the day.
Prediction: Ruud in 3
