The ATP Cincinnati Masters 1000 tournament is nearing its conclusion. We just saw Roger Federer with a shocking loss in Round 3. What will the quarterfinals bring? Here are our thoughts on all four matches.
ATP Cincinnati Quarterfinal Predictions
David Goffin vs Yoshihito Nishioka
Head-to-head: 1-1
Nishioka has been quietly moving towards a major breakthrough, and he seems to have found it this week. Much like Goffin, the Japanese man plays a very solid and powerful game from the baseline. Goffin has a better ranking, but Nishioka beat him just a few weeks ago in Washington. This match will be a tight one and come down to nerves. I’m liking the lower-ranked player here for the upset.
Prediction: Nishioka in 3
Richard Gasquet vs Roberto Bautista Agut
Head-to-head: Bautista Agut 4-1
We are witnessing a bit of a Gasquet resurgence this week. Of course, Bautista Agut has very quietly become one of the best players in the game. He is also fresh off a semifinal appearance at Wimbledon. He has also looked solid on hard courts. The two met last week, and the Spaniard won a very tight match. I think he’ll win again, but expect it to be even tighter this week.
Prediction: Bautista Agut in 3
Andrey Rublev vs Daniil Medvedev
Head-to-head: First Meeting
Rublev is fresh off the biggest win of his career, in straight sets over Roger Federer. Medvedev, meanwhile, is quickly rising to the top of the younger class of players. His defense is superb and can frustrate anyone (well, not Rafael Nadal). Rublev is playing very well right now, though, and should have the confidence and clarity–and not to mention variety–to work around the Medvedev game.
Prediction: Rublev in 2
Novak Djokovic vs Lucas Pouille
Head-to-head: 1-0 Djokovic
Pouille is becoming one of the more consistent players on tour, three years after coming on to the scene by stunning Rafael Nadal in New York. Djokovic hasn’t looked unbeatable this week, but he’s close enough. Pouille might keep this match a little tight, but it’s hard to pick him to win.
Prediction: Djokovic in 2
