The round of 16 in Cincinnati is always one of the most stacked order of play’s in the season. Much like “Manic Monday” at Wimbledon, everyone in the draw is in action. See who we think advances to the quarterfinals, as well as our predictions for the other Round of 16 matches on the women’s side.
WTA Cincinnati Day 4 Predictions
Hsieh Su-Wei vs Naomi Osaka
H2H- Osaka leads 3-1
Naomi Osaka didn’t look great in her win over Sasnovich, but she did enough to get through it. She hasn’t looked comfortable on court in Cincinnati and Hsieh is a player who won’t give you much rhythm. Hsieh defeated Osaka on hardcourt at the Miami Open, and I don’t think Osaka is playing well enough to beat her right now. If Osaka ups her level she’ll win, but I’ll go with Hsieh here. Hsieh in 3
Simona Halep vs Madison Keys
H2H- Halep leads 6-1
I think the H2H says it all here. It’s clearly not a good matchup for American Madison Keys. She’s bounced back nicely after the heartbreaking loss to Donna Vekic, winning back to back matches in Cincinnati. Halep struggled against Alexandrova but was clutch late in the third set to get the win. It’s going to be tough for Keys to hit through Halep, and that’s what it’ll take to get the win. I think Halep will extend the points when she has to, and will do enough to move on to the quarterfinals. Halep in 2
Svetlana Kuznetsova vs Sloane Stephens
H2H- Kuznetsova leads 3-2
Both Kuznetsova and Stephens had to fight for their three-set wins. Stephens has been far from her best, but she found a way to survive another day. I expect this one to be another tough three-set battle, but I think Stephens will find form as the week goes on. Stephens in 3
Elina Svitolina vs Sofia Kenin
H2H- 1-1
This is a rematch from last week’s quarterfinal in Toronto where Kenin won 7-6 6-4. Svitolina got off to a fast start, but once Kenin got it going Svitolina had no answer. After a deep run last week in Toronto, you just have to wonder if Kenin will get tired eventually. I think this is the spot where you’ll see it start to show. It’s hard to beat a high-quality player like Svitolina twice in two weeks, so I think she gets revenge for last weeks loss. Svitolina in 3
