Just eight men are left in contention at the 2019 Washington Open. A number of seeds have already fallen, but plenty of big names remain in the draw. Who will book their place in the semifinals?
Washington Open Quarterfinal Predictions
Kyle Edmund vs Peter Gojowczyk
Head-to-head: Edmund 2-0 Gojowczyk
Germany’s Peter Gojowczyk has played excellent tennis to reach the last eight at the Washington Open, not least in his straight sets win over Milos Raonic. But Kyle Edmund, who has struggled this year in no small part due to injury, has looked back to something approaching his best so far in D.C. He has been dictating with his forehand and using his first serve to good effect, though his second serve has looked vulnerable. Nonetheless, if he can stay aggressive against Gojowczyk and find a way to bring his forehand into the rally early, he should be able to find a path to victory.
Prediction: Edmund in 3

Marin Cilic vs Daniil Medvedev
Head-to-head: first meeting
Marin Cilic has delivered two impressive displays so far to reach the last eight at the Washington Open, battling past Marius Copil 7-6 7-6 before outclassing the young Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3 6-4. But he will be in for another stern test against Russia’s third-seeded Daniil Medvedev, who is also yet to drop a set at the Washington Open. Medvedev’s court coverage is bettered by few players on tour and he also possesses an excellent two-hander. Expect him to use both to bring the Croatian’s charge in D.C. to a halt.
Prediction: Medvedev in 3

Nick Kyrgios vs Norbert Gombos
Head-to-head: Kyrgios 1-0 Gombos
Not for the first time, Nick Kyrgios courted controversy at the Washington Open after arguing with umpire Fergus Murphy, before refusing to shake the Irishman’s hand. But he has also been playing some excellent tennis to beat Thai-Son Kwiatkowski, Gilles Simon and Yoshihito Nishioka, all without dropping a set. Norbert Gombos, meanwhile, has taken full advantage of his spot in the draw as a lucky loser. But up against the Australian’s excellent serve and forehand, it is hard to see Gombos, who lost the pair’s only previous meeting, enjoying much success.
Prediction: Kyrgios in 2

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Benoit Paire
Head-to-head: Paire 1-0 Tsitsipas
Stefanos Tsitsipas has so far worn the tag of top seed easily at the Washington Open, beating Tommy Paul and Jordan Thompson in straight sets. But the in-form Benoit Paire, twice a titlist on the ATP tour already this season, looks set to give the Greek a stern test. In their only previous encounter, it was Paire who emerged a 6-2 6-4 victor, though that match did come two years ago in Metz. Tsitsipas has improved considerably in the intervening period and should have just enough to edge out the talented Paire.
Prediction: Tsitsipas in 3
