The Ladies Open Lausanne will come to an end after an all-French final featuring Alize Cornet and Fiona Ferro. Will the former defend her 2018 title or will the latter conquer her first tour level trophy?
WTA Lausanne Final Prediction
Alize Cornet vs Fiona Ferro
Head-to-head: first meeting
When top seed Julia Goerges crashed out of the tournament in the first round, Cornet became the clear-cut favorite to reach the final from the top half of the draw. In theory, the reigning champion was head and shoulders above each one of her individual opponents. However, in sports, anything can really happen. Cornet needed to prove her status on the court and she lived up to the expectations.
The 29-year–old, who is seeking a seventh career WTA trophy, has excelled on return in Lausanne. Cornet managed to break serve four times against Martina Trevisan, six times versus Jasmine Paolini, eight times in her three set win against Natalia Vikhlyantseva and seven times in her 6-3 6-4 semifinal victory versus Tamara Korpatsch. Said task should be more complicated against her compatriot Ferro. The world #98 has won points on first serve at an above average rate. She arrived in Switzerland winning 58% of those points before raising the bar against Samantha Stosur (81%) and Bernarda Pera (72%) over the last two days.
Ever since she had her back against the ropes in the round of 16 against Mihaela Buzarnescu, when she was trailing 6-1 5-2, Ferro has been nearly unplayable. Her machinery is currently firing on all cylinders. Should she win her maiden title at the Ladies Championships, the Libramont native would jump to a career-high ranking #74.
Cornet’s got experience on her side, but Ferro has been more impressive this week. The Ferro train is running at full speed and Cornet, in spite of a tremendous effort to stop it, will fall short.
Prediction: Ferro in 3
