On day 6 of Wimbledon 2019 Roger Federer is aiming to reach the second week by defeating Lucas Pouille. That’s the same goal that Sam Querrey and British hope Dan Evans are aiming for in their own matches. Our panel of Yesh Ginsburg and Harsh Bhoot offer their predictions including Roger Federer vs Lucas Pouille, we also have predictions for matches featuring Rafael Nadal and Kei Nishikori.
Roger Federer vs Lucas Pouille
Yesh: Federer looked untroubled for most of his match against Jay Clarke. He had to make it through a tiebreak, but he was never under real pressure. Pouille will be more of a challenge, but not enough to take on Federer right now. Federer in 3
Harsh: Federer looked his usual self brushing aside Clarke in three sets but will be wary of Pouille’s quality. The Frenchman certainly has the baseline game to go toe to toe with anyone but feels like Federer has the bigger weapons on his serve and forehand to reach the second week. Federer in 3
Matteo Berrettini vs Diego Schwartzman
Yesh: Schwartzman has been impressive so far, but now he has to face Berrettini’s powerful serve and grass game. This young Italian is one to watch out for, and he’s about to make his first Manic Monday. Berrettini in 4
Harsh: Berrettini is in with a great chance of reaching the second week which shouldn’t come as a surprise to many. The Italian has had a breakthrough year and his grass court form was exceptional too. He won in Stuttgart and had a semi-final appearance at Halle. Schwartzman should find it tough to hit through Berrettini but the Argentine is never short of resolve which would make this an entertaining round three. Berrettini in 4
Joao Sousa vs Dan Evans
Yesh: Sousa did well to get this far, including an insane upset of free-falling Marin Cilic. All that did was open up a draw for Britain’s “bad boy.” Evans in 3
Harsh: Sousa caught fire in his second round beating the dangerous Cilic in three sets which came as a shock to many. However, it seems like a one-off match from Sousa who has struggled for consistency this season. Evans is enjoying a strong start to this year’s Wimbledon and has some good results in the grass court warm-ups to hold him in good stead. Expect the Brit to go through. Evans in 4
Sam Querrey vs John Millman
Yesh: Querrey looks in incendiary form, and his draw is wide open too. I can’t see him losing before the quarterfinals. And if Rafael Nadal is his opponent in that round, the Spaniard will need to up his game to keep up. Querrey is that good right now. Querrey in 3
Harsh: Sam Querrey has quietly snuck into the third round and looks good for another deep run at Wimbledon. Querrey shouldn’t be too fazed about Millman who hardly possesses the power to match the big American. Querrey in 3
