Wimbledon Day 1 Men’s Predictions Including Gael Monfils vs Ugo Humbert

Gael Monfils

Kevin Anderson faces Andy Murray’s doubles partner Pierre-Hugues Herbert on day 1 at Wimbledon, while Gael Monfils vs Ugo Humbert will be an all French battle. Our panel of Steen Kirby and Yesh Ginsburg offers up their predictions. We also have predictions for matches featuring Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, and Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Kevin Anderson vs Pierre-Hugues Herbert

Steen: Herbert is playing well and Anderson is just getting back on tour from injury. Despite his great track record at Wimbledon, Anderson should be one of the early big name casualties on the men’s side of the draw. I’ll back Herbert in an upset. Herbert in 5

Yesh: Anderson is playing only his second tournament since April. He struggled in his return at Queen’s, but hopefully he’s in better match shape at the moment. He’ll need it against Andy Murray’s doubles partner, who will definitely get major fan support. Anderson in 4

Gael Monfils vs Ugo Humbert

Steen: Humbert is capable on grass and should test Monfils here. The more accomplished French player is a heavy favorite though and should come through after a bit of stress. Monfils in 4

Yesh: Gael Monfils starts his next Wimbledon campaign against compatriot Ugo Humbert. Monfils is the more talented Frenchman, and he’s better on grass too. Monfils in 3

Kyle Edmund vs Jaume Munar

Steen: The Eastbourne semifinalist Edmund, who will be boosted by home support, faces Munar. The Spaniard is on a terrible 7 match losing streak and isn’t a good grass court player. Edmund in 3

Yesh: Edmund looks to be rounding into better form, and right on time, too. He gets to face rising youngster Jaume Munar, whose defensive brand of tennis will cost him on the grass. Edmund in 3

Marius Copil vs Guido Pella

Steen: Copil is far more capable on this surface and should go through in his opening match, Pella will be happy to have made the main draw here. Copil in 3

Yesh: Marius Copil has one of the most underrated serves on tour. He’ll face Guido Pella, who is far more comfortable on clay than grass. Don’t be surprised if Copil wins this without too much trouble. Copil in 4
