Sloane Stephens French Open Day 10

Day 10 of the French Open sees two women’s quarterfinals. Petra Martic and Marketa Vondrousova will square off in one, while Johanna Konta and Sloane Stephens battle out the other. We at LWOT are here to predict both of Tuesday’s matches for you. Who will win on Day 10 to advance to the semifinals? These should both be great matches, and we can’t wait to share our thoughts. Predicting today are myself (Yesh Ginsburg), Steen Kirby, Jim Smith, Pablo Mosquera, and Glenys Furness.

French Open Day 10 Women’s Quarterfinal Predictions

Petra Martic vs Marketa Vondrousova

Jim:
Both Vondrousova and Martic have enjoyed excellent tournaments but neither will have any intention of resting on their laurels. Vondrousova looked impressively composed in dispatching 12th seed Anastasija Sevastova–who was admittedly weary after her epic clash with Elise Mertens–and is playing with a confidence that belies her years. Martic, meanwhile, is playing arguably the best tennis of her career. But Vondrousova is playing with a youthful exuberance that seems likely to be hard to stop.
Prediction: Vondrousova in 3

Pablo:
Martic is higher ranked and owns a lopsided 4-0 head to head advantage, but Vondrousova has looked like a world beater so far at Roland Garros. The 19-year-old has only conceded 17 games in four matches. Following a remarkable upset of No. 2 seed Karolina Pliskova, the Croatian looked more vulnerable against Kaia Kanepi in the Round of 16. Vondrousova has been knocking on the door of greatness for a few months and the French Open is shaping up to be her real breakthrough.
Prediction: Vondrousova in 2

Steen:
Martic dominates the H2H 4-0 and all of those wins came in the last two seasons (including a win on clay in the recent Istanbul final). With wins over Pliskova, Kanepi, and Mladenovic, the Croat has proven herself. Despite Vondrousova dishing out two bagel sets in four matches and not dropping a set, her run will end here.
Prediction: Martic in 3

Yesh:
Vondrousova looks absolutely unstoppable right now, while Martic struggled in her first set on Sunday. Then again, Martic looked pretty unstoppable herself most of this tournament. The Croat is the better player in this matchup and the more experienced. This match may come down to who can avoid nerves the best, but if both are playing well, Martic will win. Barely.
Prediction: Martic in 3

Johanna Konta vs Sloane Stephens

Jim:
It had been an indifferent year for Stephens coming into the French Open, but she has looked assured in Paris so far. Her straight-sets win over former-champion Garbine Muguruza demonstrated her enviable adaptability on the court and she will surely like her chances of returning to the final, or perhaps going one better. Konta, meanwhile, has been a clay-court revelation this season. But on a slow court the grinding defence of Stephens presents something of a match up nightmare for the Briton.
Prediction: Stephens in 2

Glenys:
Stephens has the experience in the French Open, having made the final last year. Although Konta leads the head to head between them, Stephens is not an easy player to bypass. Head rules heart as a Brit and despite Konta’s impressive form on clay, I’m picking the American to move on.
Prediction: Stephens in 3

Steen:
Both players are in great form but Konta has won both H2H meetings, including recently in Rome on the clay. It’s a shame the run has to end here for either player, and Stephens is coming off a great win over Muguruza but I’ll back the Brit.
Prediction: Konta in 3

Yesh:
This match should be a great one. Two very talented players are fighting for a semifinal spot, and they have to know based on the draw that they’ll meet an inexperienced opponent in that match. Both players have been here before, but Stephens has won the big matches more in her career. On top of that, she is far more comfortable on the clay than Konta is. Give me the American to knock out the Brit in France.
Prediction: Stephens in 2
