Novak Djokovic vs Hubert Hurkacz Prediction: One of the two tournament favorites, Novak Djokovic, will kick off his 2019 French Open campaign on day 2 against young Polish player Hubert Hurkacz. British #1 Kyle Edmund is also in action as Steen Kirby and Yesh Ginsburg offer up their predictions. You can also review our picks for matches featuring Rafael Nadal and Frances Tiafoe.
Novak Djokovic vs Hubert Hurkacz
Yesh: Hurkacz is not the first-round matchup that anyone really wants. He can cause anyone trouble with his huge game, but he’s not consistent enough to really threaten Djokovic. Don’t be surprised if he steals a set, though. Djokovic in 3
Steen: Hurkacz can be a tough opponent, he has a big game and will try to hit some winners against Djokovic. Djokovic’s defensive countering game on the clay should hold up well though, I expect Djokovic to ease through after fighting for at least a set. Djokovic in 3
Jeremy Chardy vs Kyle Edmund
Yesh: Kyle Edmund has not been in good form all year. The Brit gets a decent matchup against a player past his best, but Chardy in front of the French crowd will be a tough challenge. Chardy in 5
Steen: Edmund has had a poor season, likely feeling the pressure of being the British #1 and all the attention that comes with it. Chardy will have home support though he’s been mediocre lately. Given this is clay I feel Edmund will find a way to win, I don’t expect much though. Edmund in 5
Tennys Sandgren vs Radu Albot
Yesh: Tennys Sandgren has fallen off the map since last year’s Australian Open run. Albot, meanwhile, is in the middle of the best year of his life. Albot in 4
Steen: Sandgren is in terrible form and reddit’s favorite tennis player Radu Albot is playing well enough to suggest he’ll easily win this match, especially given the American Sandgren is poor on clay. Albot in 3
Nikoloz Basilashvili vs Juan Ignacio Londero
Yesh: Londero is quietly becoming a decent threat on clay. Basilashvili has the better results so far, but he can be very inconsistent under pressure. Don’t be shocked to see an upset here. Londero in 4
Steen: Londero is a South American clay courter and he has a puncher’s chance here. With that said, Basilashvili has been improving himself on clay and he’s now a solid tour level player. Don’t write him off even though clay isn’t his best surface. Basilashvili in 4
