Day 5 at the Estoril Open is shaping up to be the best day of the tournament so far with four high-quality matches to be played. Can the two qualifiers Joao Domingues, and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina go one step further and advance to the semifinals?
ATP Estoril Quarterfinal Predictions
Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Joao Domingues
H2H- First Meeting
Joao Domingues’ dream run continues as John Millman was forced to retire from their match in the second set with a foot injury. Going up against #1 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas will be the qualifier’s toughest test yet. I didn’t think Domingues would get past Millman, and I certainly don’t think he’ll be able to get past Tsitsipas. Credit to him though because even with a loss he’ll move up almost 50 spots in the rankings.
Prediction: Tsitsipas in 2
David Goffin vs Malek Jaziri
H2H-Jaziri leads 1-0
David Goffin played the best he has in a long time in his second round win over last year’s champion Joao Sousa. Goffin took the wild card in Estoril looking to find some form, and it seems like it’s paying off so far. His opponent, Malek Jaziri, is typically hot and cold, but he played great in the second round to upset Leonardo Mayer. This one should be close, but if Goffin continues to play the way he did today, he’ll advance to the semifinals.
Prediction: Goffin 3
Pablo Cuevas vs Frances Tiafoe
H2H- First Meeting
It will be interesting to see how much gas Frances Tiafoe has left in the tank after his comeback win over Yoshihito Nishioka in the second round of the Estoril Open. The American was down 6-2 3-1 before coming back to win in a third set tiebreaker. Cuevas will undoubtedly be the fresher of the two which I think will be a crucial factor here. I think Cuevas moves on to the semifinals.
Prediction: Cuevas in 2
Gael Monfils vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina
H2H- First Meeting
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is proving to be one of the best stories of the Estoril Open. The 19-year-old qualifier dismantled Jeremy Chardy 6-1 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals. Up next he’ll have his toughest test yet against Gael Monfils. It’s tough to tell what kind of form Monfils is in right now after defeating Reilly Opelka in the second round. The quality of the match wasn’t too high due to wind issues in Estoril. I think Monfils gets through here, but Davidovich Fokina is absolutely a player to keep an eye on in the future.
Prediction: Monfils in 3
