The 2019 WTA Bogota Tournament (Claro Open Colsanitas) rolls on with three of the four semifinalists seeking their maiden WTA title, and at least one of the two finalists guaranteed to have that opportunity on the final day. Here is your look at all the semifinal action.
Amanda Anisimova vs Beatriz Haddad Maia
The American teenager Anisimova has never played Haddad Maia. Despite her youth, Anisimova has a WTA final on her resume in Japan and as the former world #2 ITF Junior she’s demonstrated already she can compete at the highest level, and she’s one of the brightest young stars of the WTA Tour and American tennis. Haddad Maia, just 22, has generally found more success in doubles than singles, having won this particular tournament twice in doubles, but she also has a singles final on her resume and retains plenty of potential that could see her turn into a more serious WTA contender.
The momentum favors Anisimova as Maia had to go through qualifying and could be fatigued. I’ll back the American. Prediction: Anisimova in 2
Lara Arruabarrena vs Astra Sharma
Lara Arruabarrena is the most accomplished player in the field, having won two WTA titles, including this tournament back in 2012. The veteran is another who has been stronger in doubles than singles but plays her best tennis on clay and has a real opportunity to lift the title here. Both her and her opponent Astra Sharma have dropped just a set en route to the semifinals so this should be a competitive match between relatively fresh players.
Sharma has been rising this year for the first time at 23. Her relative lack of experience at this level compared to Arruabarrena presents a disadvantage and she’s a clear underdog in this match. I expect the Spaniard to take control and secure a confident win that sets her up to potentially win her third WTA title. Prediction: Arruabarrena in 2
