For the past few years, the Abierto Mexicano has attracted some of the biggest names in the sport. The 2019 edition is no different as the tournament gets underway.
ATP Acapulco Day 1 Predictions
Marcel Granollers vs John Millman
The first ATP match of this year’s tournament will feature two veterans of the tour. Granollers is looking to continue his already impressive week in Acapulco as the Spaniard has made it through qualifying. Millman is coming off the back of a career best season where he made the quarterfinals of the US Open, defeating Roger Federer along the way. The two have never met before – at any level – but expect the Australian to grind Granollers down in the sweltering conditions.
Prediction: Millman in 2
Frances Tiafoe vs Jordan Thompson
The final match of the day will see the exciting Tiafoe take on Thompson for a spot in Round 2. The 21-year-old American started the year in emphatic fashion by making the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. However, he has lost his two matches since. Thompson is solidifying himself as a top 80 player and has enjoyed an encouraging 7-5 start to the season. The Mexican crowd love a showman and Tiafoe will slot right into that role to the delight of the fans.
Prediction: Tiafoe in 3
Ryan Harrison vs Stan Wawrinka
This is arguably the match of the day as the American qualifier takes on a three-time Grand Slam champion on Cancha Central. Harrison looks to be in good form as he powered his way through qualifying without dropping a set. Wawrinka is also in good form, if Rotterdam is anything to go by. The Swiss defeated three top 20 players on his way to the final, before losing to Gael Monfils in three tight sets. Wawrinka’s powerful game will probably be too hot for Harrison to handle.
Prediction: Wawrinka in 2
