It’s time for the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. Only three rounds remain until we crown a Grand Slam champion. Will it be Serena Williams again? Will it be anybody else? Before we find out the winner, though, we have to know who wins the quarterfinals. There are two quarterfinal matches on Tuesday: Ashleigh Barty vs Petra Kvitova and Danielle Collins vs Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Who will win? We predict them for you. Predicting today are myself (Yesh Ginsburg), Steen Kirby, Tracey Essex, Eric Han, and Jay Sandhu.
Australian Open Day 9 Women’s Quarterfinals Predictions
Ashleigh Barty vs Petra Kvitova
Tracey:
The hometown favorite stormed back to beat Maria Sharapova in three sets. No doubt a great performance, but Barty’s win was definitely aided by Sharapova’s ten double faults and abundant unforced errors. Kvitova will not make those mistakes; and, after her dominant win over Amanda Anisimova, it’s clear she’s playing to win.
Prediction: Kvitova in 2
Jay:
Knowing that Kvitova usually plays really leading up to Slams before losing in the first couple of rounds, I was expecting her to lose very early on, but she is still going strong and is probably the favorite to win the title. Barty has also made her breakthrough and has done well to reach this far. The pair last met only about a week ago; Kvitova narrowly won, and I believe the result will be the same again.
Prediction: Kvitova in 3
Steen:
Kvitova is bossing her opponents around the court and has yet to drop a set. Barty will have home support but she should eventually succumb to the hard-hitting Czech.
Prediction: Kvitova in 2
Eric:
Kvitova has yet to drop a set, and the scorelines of all the opponents she faced so far have been very one-sided. Barty will put up a fight for sure and will feed on the energy in Rod Laver Arena, but will that be enough?
Prediction: Kvitova in 3
Yesh:
Barty has surprised us before, but everyone here is picking Kvitova for a reason. The Czech looks to be on top of her game, and seems finally ready to reach her first Slam semifinal since her tragic injury in a home invasion over two years ago. Barty will fight with the crowd behind her, but this is Kvitova’s match to lose.
Danielle Collins vs Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova
Tracey:
Twice I thought Collins would be eliminated, and twice she’s proved me wrong. I won’t make that mistake again! Collins’ quick footwork and laser-sharp, powerful backhand will be more than Pavlyuchenkova can handle. Kudos to Pavlyuchenkova for taking out Sloane Stephens, but this should be a quick and definite win for the 25-year-old, hard-hitting American.
Prediction: Collins in 2
Steen:
Collins incredible run should continue against a beatable opponent for this stage. Look for the American to continue to build her name with a semifinal showing.
Prediction: Collins in 2
Eric:
This is a difficult match to predict as both players have been under the radar for most of the tournament. Collins beat Kerber comfortably last round. However, we have seen time and time again, that when an underdog beats a heavy favorite, they always tend to underperform the following match. Just based on that, I will say Pavlyuchenkova will win.
Prediction: Pavlyuchenkova in 2
Jay:
This is a very unexpected matchup, between two players no one thought would reach this far. Collins’ run is a massive surprise as she looked down and out against Goerges when the German was serving for the match against her, and Pavlyuchenkova has also beaten some high quality opponents in Bertens, Sasnovich, and Stephens. It will be a close match once again, but Collins played a perfect match against Kerber and she will continue to play at that high level.
Prediction: Collins in 3
Yesh:
Danielle Collins flipped a switch. There’s no other way to describe it. She was good in Miami last year and solid early on in this tournament. Against Kerber, though, she was unreal. The level Collins showed was probably good enough to win a Slam. It was definitely good enough to win this match.
Prediction: Collins in 2
