US Open Men’s Quarterfinal Predictions Including Marin Cilic vs Kei Nishikori

The 2018 US Open quarterfinals conclude with Novak Djokovic battling the upset minded John Millman, and a 2014 final rematch between Marin Cilic and Kei Nishikori. Our panelists break down all the action.

Novak Djokovic vs John Millman

Yesh Ginsburg: Millman is coming off the win of a lifetime. He played well, but that match was all about Federer’s troubles. Djokovic won’t have the same issues. This match should go very quickly. Djokovic in 3

Steen Kirby: Beating Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic back to back is a feat that few players have accomplished, and it’s an elite group. John Millman will get his chance to join them, though Djokovic is a heavy favorite. Millman took advantage of the enormous opportunity Federer presented him and he was the fitter player on the night. Djokovic is unlikely to struggle with fitness like Federer did, and Millman’s shotmaking will probably not be up to par, a Novak win is the safe pick. Djokovic in 3

Utkarsha Mitra: The man of the hour, John Millman will fancy his chances after a massive boost in confidence following the win over Federer. Regardless, Djokovic has looked very comfortable thus far and he’s never lost a quarterfinal at US Open. Djokovic in 4

Lukas Weese: Everyone was hoping for a Federer/Djokovic Classic. But instead Djokovic will be taking on the Aussie John Millman, who pulled off one of the greatest upsets in tennis history defeating Roger Federer in four sets. Djokovic is coming into this match rested and winning a straight set victory. Djokovic won double the amount of games compared to his opponent and has been in great form all tournament. Millman is coming off a tough victory over Federer, where he won two straight tiebreakers to defeat the Swiss Maestro in four sets. Millman served brilliantly, serving 70 percent for the match and only giving up 1 double fault. Despite Millman being a Cinderella story, I just can’t see him defeat Djokovic. Djokovic’s defense and return of serve are at an all time high right now, and he will power his way to his first US Open semifinal since 2016. Djokovic in 3

Marin Cilic vs Kei Nishikori

Yesh: This is a rematch of the 2014 final here. Cilic won that match, and Cilic looks like the better player now. You never know how Nishikori will react to the conditions, especially the heat, but I feel confident with Cilic here. Cilic in 4

Steen: An under the radar 2014 final rematch, Cilic was impressive to recover from a five setter to put away David Goffin in the next round. Nishikori has played well but conditions do not favor him this tournament and in this matchup Cilic’s power should be too much. Cilic in 4

Utkarsha: US Open 2014 men’s final rematch. This one should be exciting. Both have looked good thus far and played clutch tennis when needed. Nishikori leads 8-6 in their H2H, and he’ll take his chances for sure. But, since it’s a day match, Cilic is more likely to cope with the conditions. Cilic in 5

Lukas: This is a rematch of the 2014 US Open Final, where Cilic defeated Nishikori in three sets to capture his first and only Grand Slam tournament. These two have met 14 times with Nishikori leading the head to head 8-6. In his straight set victory against Kohlschreiber, Nishikori won 68 percent of his service points and had 18 unforced errors. Cilic has been playing extremely well heading into the quarters, having a first serve percentage of a whopping 83 percent. Through four matches, Cilic has a combined 51 aces. It will be a close marathon match but I like Cilic to advance. He’s moving well and he will use his serve and groundstrokes to put pressure on Nishikori’s defense. Cilic in 5
