Wimbledon Women’s Final Predictions: Serena Williams vs Angelique Kerber

This year’s Wimbledon final is a rematch of the 2016 Australian Open final. That match signified Angelique Kerber’s ascension to the top of the women’s game. Of course, Serena Williams exacted her revenge at Wimbledon that same year, when she defeated Kerber in the final. The pair will now contest their third Grand Slam final, with each having won one so far. Who will take this one? We’re here to predict it for you. Predicting today are writers Lukas Weese, Brett Margolies, Jay Sandhu, and Nurein Ahmed, along with editor Steen Kirby.

Wimbledon Women’s Final Predictions

Serena Williams vs Angelique Kerber

Lukas:
Serena Williams will be competing in her 30th Grand Slam final at Wimbledon this coming Saturday, taking on two-time Major champion Angelique Kerber. Serena is also the third oldest woman in the Open Era to reach a Grand Slam final, and is trying to win her first Major as a new mother. This is the ninth time these two ladies have met, with Serena leading the head-to-head 6-2. Kerber reached the final by defeating Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets. Kerber only had 10 winners and converted 61% of her first serve points. Serena also won in straight sets over Julia Goerges, where she racked up five aces and converted 87% of her first serve points. Serena’s serve is too good at the moment, which will counter Kerber’s return and ground strokes. Kerber needs to mix up her shots, giving Serena different pace and make her run the length of the court. It will be close but I think Serena pulls this off to tie Margaret Court’s Grand Slam total at 24.
Prediction: Williams in 2

Jay:
Though Serena has played unbelievably well so far, she hasn’t faced a player like Kerber yet. The German will make her work for every point and will not offer many errors, unlike Serena’s previous opponents who were mostly big hitters. Kerber lost their last matchup two years ago in the final and will want revenge. She will also force many errors out of her opponent and I feel Kerber’s consistency will edge her to her third Slam title.

Steen:
Kerber is a very good player but Serena is on the precipice of a first post pregnancy Slam to add to her legacy. Playing this well with everything on the line, Serena has to be the favorite.
Prediction: Williams in 2

Nurein:
I think even Serena Williams will likely admit to herself that this draw was like slicing through butter. But you can’t fault her. They say you can only beat what is in front of you and she has done it superbly. No disrespect to the likes of Goerges and Mladenovic who are good players, but they are not Williams’ equal. Kerber avenged her losses to the likes of Kasatkina and Osaka, and she was immense against Ostapenko. The German has had a much tougher run-in and I expect her to test Williams. I don’t think Serena is the greatest mover on the court, and that is how Camila Giorgi took her to the limit. But let’s be honest, Serena is the favorite here and rightly so, and I think it will be a tight straight sets win for the American.
Prediction: Williams in 2

Brett:
It’s fitting that this is the final. Both players genuinely are playing the best on the women’s side right now. It’s hard to pick against Angelique Kerber after what she did to Ostapenko today, but I still think she’ll have to raise her level, even more, to get past Serena. I can see it going a little like their 2016 match at Wimbledon where it’s tight in the beginning, but Serena wins in straight sets.
Prediction: Williams in 2
