We are finishing up the quarterfinals of the French Open. There will be two women’s quarterfinals match contested on Wednesday, so we have six writers offering their thoughts on the matches. Predicting the matches of Simona Halep vs Angelique Kerber and Garbine Muguruza vs Maria Sharapova are writers Nurein Ahmed, Brett Margolies, and Manuel Traquete, along with editors Yesh Ginsburg, Brandon Wall, and Steen Kirby.

French Open Predictions Day 11 Women’s Matches

Simona Halep vs Angelique Kerber

Brett:
As the tournament progresses, Simona Halep’s chances to win her first Slam are getting better and better. She played well in her 6-2 6-1 win over Mertens. Kerber took out home favorite Caroline Garcia easily. Both players are playing their best tennis right now which should make for a good match.
Prediction: Kerber in 3

Manuel:
The World #1 continues to chase her first Slam and should be able to come through here.
Prediction: Halep in 3

Nurein:
I think Simona Halep is destined to win the French Open. Whether this will happen Saturday or next year I am not so sure. But this is a big opportunity for her. She has momentum on her side, and this is one of her hardest obstacles along with a potential semifinal against a former champion. Halep’s match against Kerber was a thriller in Melbourne, but I don’t see a repeat performance of the same because Kerber is not a world beater on the clay and Halep is sensing blood at the minute.
Prediction: Halep in 2

Steen:
A great opportunity for either player, I trust Halep more on clay and she should be favored in her next matches as well.
Prediction: Halep in 2

Brandon:
Kerber looked very impressive in her fourth round match, dispatching of hometown hopeful Caroline Garcia in straight sets. Last year’s finalist, Halep, has also looked strong, but will have the added pressure of defending her hard-earned points from 2017. Kerber, on the other hand, has nothing to lose and will go out with that mentality, throwing everything she’s got at the No. 1 seed.
Prediction: Kerber in 2

Yesh:
Kerber’s win over Caroline Garcia was shocking in how routine it was. This match will be anything but. Halep is playing some of the best tennis in the world. If she can finally overcome her nerves in late-round Slam matches, we may see her finally lift the trophy here.

Garbine Muguruza vs Maria Sharapova

Brett:
Both Sharapova and Muguruza virtually received walkovers into the quarterfinals as Tsurenko was only able to play two games before retiring, and Serena withdrew before the meeting against Sharapova. Sharapova is 3-0 against Muguruza H2H, but they haven’t met since 2014. I think this will be very close, but give a slight edge to Sharapova with all of her big match experience.
Prediction: Sharapova in 3

Manuel:
Both players are past champions in Paris, in what promises to be a clash of titans. Sharapova has won all three previous matches between the two, but those matches all happened in a very different stage of their careers.
Prediction: Muguruza in 3

Nurein:
When I looked at the head-to-head between these two, I was amazed to see Sharapova leading 3-0. But then again their last meeting was in 2014, and since then Muguruza has evolved to become one of the best tennis players in the women’s circuit. This is going to be a very high quality affair, and both players perhaps did not expect their passage to the QFs to be this easy. Sharapova did not even have to a hit a ball. I think both players have very similar game styles and passages of play, but the Russian makes too many unforced errors which could cost her dearly. I see three sets here, and “Vamos Garbine” to progress.

Steen:
Muguruza is a good player but getting a walkover in the quarters will help Sharapova immensely. This is an even contest with the edge going to the (slightly) fresher player.
Prediction: Sharapova in 3

Brandon:
This match promises to be a thriller, and with Sharapova getting a walkover and Muguruza a retirement in their respective fourth round matches, both players should be full of energy and ready to fight in this massive quarterfinal clash. Sharapova has a perfect 3-0 record against Muguruza and will likely improve upon this statistic if she can produce the same form that has gotten her to this point in the tournament.
Prediction: Sharapova in 3

Yesh:
Maria Sharapova might never have another chance like this to win a Slam. She’s in the tougher half of the draw, but don’t underestimate her. She knows she won’t have many more opportunities like this. Unfortunately for her, that knowledge won’t be enough. Muguruza is just too good right now.
